WEATHER & CLIMATE:
Bhutan has four main seasons, which include the monsoon / wet period with the summer times of June to August.
The four seasons is spring from March to May, summer / Monsoon starts from June to August. The autumn/fall begins from September to November.
The winter starts from December to February the coldest months, especially around a higher altitude above 1,800 m high.
The best time to visit Bhutan is spring and autumn times, the spring season with enough sun-light hours. Much warmer during the daytime with cooler morning and right time, chances of rain sometimes and snow in a mountainous region.
The other best high and peak time is autumn/fall from September to November, where days are fine and clear. However, days are shorter due to sun-light hours, cold morning, late afternoon, and nighttime. Chances of snowfall around a higher altitude above 2,500 m high sometimes.
Detailed Itinerary of Bhutan Cultural Heritage Tour
Day 1: Fly to Paro airport 2,280 m and drive to Thimphu 2,300 m-02 hrs.
On arrival at Paro-Bhutan’s international airport after going through visa formalities. Then outside the air terminal, our native Bhutanese guide receives you with a warm welcome. A drive of two hours to Thimphu capital of Bhutan, the ride leads through countryside dotted with farm villages. Observe the typical Bhutanese landscapes and Buddhist cultural villages, as the drive enters Thimphu and transfers into a nice hotel.
Day 2: At Thimphu 2,280 m for cultural tour.
After refreshing breakfast, a guide will take for a tour visit of a memorial stupa, an indigenous hospital, where traditional medicine is still practiced, and the painting school. Tour of Memorial Chorten (temple) built-in memory of the late 3rd King of Bhutan.
Visit Changangkha Lakhang, the oldest temple in the valley offering a nice view of the valley, a short scenic drive for a visit of the largest and recently built statue of Buddha with a wonderful view of the entire Thimphu valley. After an interesting tour around Thimphu return back to the hotel, after lunch tour around the traditional Hand Made Paper Mill, School of Arts and Crafts where students learn 13 different arts used predominantly in Bhutan, Folk Heritage Museum, National Library, and the Traditional Institute of Medicine. Drive to the Zilukha nunnery to meet the nuns and interact with them.
Day 3: Drive to Punakha 1,350 m via Dochu-La 3,200 m - 03 hrs.
After a wonderful time at Thimphu a scenic short drive to Punakha through Dochu-la pass at 3,200 m, in fine clear weather a fantastic view of Bhutan’s highest mountains Chomolhari / Jumolhari can be seen with other snowcapped peaks extending almost 180 degrees.
Walk around 108 stupas and continue to drive to the sub-tropical valley of Punakha, on arrival, if time permits hike to the temple of Chime Lakhang, the temple of fertility associated with the religious art of phallus.
At Punakha a short hike for less than 2 hours to Tashigang Hongtso Monastery, located in a clearing at the edge of a serene forested area overlooking the town of Hongtso, Tashigang has been one of our favorite visits for well over a decade. In the surrounding buildings are pilgrims practicing silent meditation, and a peaceful calm pervades the area.
The monastery houses about 40 orphans, who receive language, religious and general education from the monks an interesting tour of the Gompa (monastery), observe a private ceremony with chanting using ceremonial instruments in the main temple room, here you can interact with the head lama.
Day 4: Drive to Bumthang 2,600 m via Trongsa -05 hrs.
Day 5: At Bumthang local hike and excursion tour
A wonderful valley of Bumthang surrounded by lovely woods of tall firs, pines, hemlocks and rhododendron trees. After a nice breakfast, guide will take you for interesting short hike up to 17th Century Jakar Dzong. Built during the time of Shabdrung Nawang Namgyal, the first king of Bhutan. Hike around the valley and visit the nice traditional farm villages enriched with glorious heritage culture.
Day 6: Drive to Phobjikha Valley / Gangtey Village 2,830 m (180 km) -05 hrs
After an exciting time at Bumthang, after breakfast an interesting drive to Gangtey, a scenic journey around mid-hills with fabulous scenery of green landscapes and traditional villages, on arrival check in a farm house for overnight stop. Phobjikha valley at 3,000 meters high, one of the few glacial valleys in Bhutan and is the main habitation of the endangered black-necked crane.
The valley of Gangtey is one of the most beautiful places in Bhutan, where one can spend for more days.
Day 7: Drive to Paro - 06 hrs.
After an enjoyable moment at Bumthang, Phobjikha and Gangtey village, drive back to Paro, a picturesque ride. An opportunity to observe more rural farm life of Bhutanese people, as drive leads over high ridge facing beautiful scenery.
As the overland journey slowly ends on reaching at Paro for overnight halt, in the comfort of a nice hotel.
Day 8: Hike to Taksing Monastery Tiger’s Nest overnight in Paro
After breakfast, guide will take you for a short drive to the outskirt of Paro town for an hour hike. Climb to the top ridge, where Bhutan’s famous landmark an old Taksing Monastery known as Tiger’s Nest situated.
A place for retreats and meditation of many Buddhist monks and high priests of Bhutan, the monastery is located within the overhanging rock cliff with superb views of Paro town and snowcapped peaks towards the north, from here with steep downhill a short drive to visit 17th-century Ta-Dzong, later converted into the National Museum in 1967, afternoon free at leisure for a stroll around Paro shops and markets.
Day 9: International departure towards respective countries.
