Highlights
Most Everest helicopter tours fall into one of two categories. The first is a single day tour that returns to Kathmandu before lunch. The second is a helicopter-supported version of the full Everest Base Camp Trek, which still requires close to two weeks. The Everest Base Camp helicopter tour, 1 night 2 days, was designed to sit between these two options. It gives travelers a full night in the Khumbu region, rather than a same day flyover, without requiring a two week commitment.
The difference comes down to a single overnight stay. Most Everest helicopter tours land near Kalapatthar, allow a short window for photos, and return travelers to Kathmandu the same afternoon. This approach is efficient, but it rarely allows enough time to properly experience the region. This trip adds one night in Namche Bazaar, the main Sherpa trading town in the Khumbu, before the second flight toward Kalapatthar the following morning. That single addition is what separates a genuine visit to the Everest region from a brief look at it through a helicopter window.
Namaste Nepal Trekking has been offering helicopter tours in this area for over eight years, starting with one-day trips and then introducing the overnight option when it became apparent that there was a demand for a longer type of experience. The guide includes details of the entire itinerary, the present prices, the weight limits, the best months to fly, and the questions that travelers most frequently ask before making a booking.
Trip Overview
A one day helicopter tour to Everest covers a significant amount of ground in a short window, typically six to seven hours from hotel pickup to hotel drop off. This speed is the main appeal for travelers with very limited time. However, most of the region passes by outside the helicopter window rather than under the traveler’s feet. Guests who have taken the one day version often describe it afterward as an excellent flight rather than a genuine visit to the mountains.
The journey fills this gap by adding one night to the main route. Rather than flying straight to Kalapatthar and back, visitors land first in the Khumbu area, usually in Namche Bazaar, and stay there until the next morning. This extra evening alters the nature of the whole trip since the tourists have dinner with the mountains still visible outside the window, spend a full night at high altitude, and then have another morning flight instead of making just one attempt to get good weather.
No trekking experience or particular fitness level is needed, a fact that comes as a surprise to many people who are calling for the first time. The fact that there is an overnight stay is what makes this trip appropriate for families with children, for older tourists who have decided against doing a long trek, and for photographers who would like to see a second sunrise rather than depending on a single attempt. In reality, the requirements for the trip are less than most people anticipate: just two free days and the readiness to spend one night above 3,000 meters.
The following features distinguish this version from the alternatives:
- A confirmed overnight stay inside the Khumbu, not a same day round trip
- A landing near Kalapatthar with close, unobstructed views of Mount Everest
- Breakfast at Hotel Everest View, one of the highest hotels in the world
- Free time to explore Namche Bazaar, the region’s Sherpa capital
- A shorter, lower cost alternative to the full 12 to 14 day trek
Why Choose the 2 Days 1 Night Everest Helicopter Tour
More Time at Altitude Than a Day Trip
Time spent on the ground is the real measure of value on any helicopter tour, and the one day version offers relatively little of it, typically two to three hours split between Kalapatthar and breakfast. This trip extends that same window to closer to eighteen hours, counted from the afternoon landing in Namche to departure the following morning. The difference is significant. It is the gap between viewing a place through a window and actually standing inside it.
A Real Overnight in the Khumbu, Not Just a Flyover
Namche Bazaar sits at 3,440 meters, built into a natural bowl in the hillside above the Dudh Koshi river. It has served as the region’s main Sherpa trading town for generations, long before helicopter tourism existed here. Spending a night in Namche allows travelers to walk its stone lanes, visit the Sherpa Culture Museum, and sit in a bakery that has served passing trekkers for years. A day tour omits all of this by design, since no time is built in for it.
Ideal for Limited Time Travelers Who Still Want Depth
The full trek takes twelve to fourteen days for a clear reason: it covers the region on foot, one village at a time. Most working travelers cannot allocate that much time to a single trip, regardless of interest. This package includes the trek’s two most memorable destinations, Namche Bazaar and the Kalapatthar viewpoint, within a 48 hour window. Travelers give up the daily walking, but for most guests, this is a reasonable trade. Their goal is to see the mountains, not necessarily to walk the entire distance to them.
Two Mornings for Photography Instead of One
Weather in the Khumbu tends to build through the morning hours, which means the quality of available light depends heavily on timing. A one day tour provides exactly one opportunity for strong light, and if cloud cover arrives early, the opportunity is lost. This version provides two opportunities instead: one on the afternoon of arrival in Namche, and a second at sunrise the following day near Kalapatthar. The second window is typically the stronger of the two, and most photographs from this trip are taken during it.
A Gentler Introduction to High Altitude Than the Full Trek
By sleeping one night between 3,440 and 3,880 meters, the body has a head start in adjusting before the brief ascent to 5,545 meters the following day. The requirement in this case is much less than that of the full trek, during which trekkers remain above 5,000 meters for several consecutive days on foot. Travelers still have to cope with real high altitude conditions, such as cold mornings, simple food at the lodge, and air that is noticeably thinner at this elevation. Even so, they do not suffer the accumulated fatigue that results from spending a full week walking in such conditions.
What You Will See From the Helicopter Window
As soon as the helicopter leaves Kathmandu the landscape changes rapidly. During the first few minutes the valley below spreads out into fields and scattered houses, and then turns into forest as the aircraft climbs towards the Solu Khumbu district. When Lukla appears over the horizon the land has become much steeper, with rivers cutting through narrow gorges and the first snow-capped peaks showing up in the distance.
After the refueling stop, the route follows the Dudh Koshi river the rest of the way to Namche, tracing roughly the same path trekkers walk on foot over two full days. Travelers pass over the same suspension bridges those trekkers cross, though from an angle almost nobody on the ground ever sees. Namche Bazaar itself is one of the more striking views on the entire route, its houses arranged in a horseshoe shape against the hillside.
On the second day a new group of landmarks is seen. As the helicopter flies towards Kalapatthar it passes close to Tengboche Monastery and keeps to the edge of the Khumbu Glacier, with Ama Dablam’s sharp summit generally visible to the south. Pumori and Nuptse are located further away, and Everest and Lhotse take centre stage in the landscape when the helicopter has landed.
Who Should Book This 1 Night 2 Days Everest Helicopter Tour
This trip tends to suit a fairly specific group of travelers:
- Travelers on a tight schedule but still wanting an authentic experience of the Khumbu
- Families with small children who can not handle a multi day trek
- Older travelers or anyone with health restrictions that prevent long walks
- Couples looking for a quick trip with a meaningful experience
- Photographers who want two sunrise windows rather than relying on one
- First time Nepal visitors evaluating the Everest region before a longer trek
Travelers with strong trekking fitness and two spare weeks may find the full Everest Base Camp Trek more suitable, since it covers the entire route on foot rather than a two day version of it. Travelers for whom speed and price matter more than an overnight stay may prefer the 1 Day Mount Everest Helicopter Tour, which accomplishes the trip for less money. This trip tends to suit travelers positioned between those two options, wanting more than a flyover but not ready to commit two weeks to achieve it.
This trip may not be the right choice for travelers who specifically want to say they walked to Base Camp themselves, since the walking portion here is limited to an afternoon in Namche. It is also worth reconsidering for travelers who are uncomfortable in small aircraft, since the flights are a central part of the experience rather than an optional element. For most other travelers, this trip is a strong fit.
What to Pack for a 2 Day Everest Helicopter Tour
Packing for this trip is not the same as packing for a full trek. There is no need for sleeping bags, crampons, or two weeks of trail clothing, since the walking here is limited to a few hours around Namche Bazaar. What actually matters is staying warm during two cold mornings, having a few practical items for the overnight stay, and keeping your bag light. Helicopter cargo space is limited, and every kilogram counts once the aircraft climbs above 4,000 meters, so it helps to pack with that in mind rather than bringing everything you own.
- Layered clothing, since temperatures shift significantly through the day
- A thermal base layer or fleece, useful during the early morning flights when it is coldest
- A down jacket, gloves, and a warm hat, especially for the 6:00 AM departure from Kathmandu
- Comfortable trekking pants or trousers that allow easy movement around Namche
- Sunglasses and sunscreen, since sun exposure is strong at this altitude
- Comfortable, closed toe shoes suitable for walking around Namche Bazaar
- A buff or light scarf, useful against wind and dust near the helipads
- A fully charged camera or phone for the two morning viewing windows
- A power bank, since cold weather reduces battery performance faster than you’d expect
- Your passport, or a clear copy, for standard airport security procedures
- A change of clothes packed specifically for the overnight stay in Namche
- A small toiletry kit, since not every lodge provides one
- Any personal medication you take regularly, along with a basic first aid kit
- A reusable water bottle, since staying hydrated matters more than usual at this altitude
- A few snacks or energy bars for the flights and your afternoon walk around town
- Large backpacks or heavy suitcases, since helicopter cargo space is genuinely limited
- Full trekking gear, such as sleeping bags or crampons, none of which this trip requires
- Drones, which require special permits and remain restricted across the Everest region
- Valuable jewelry or anything you would be genuinely upset to lose along the way
Outline Itinerary
Kathmandu to Lukla to Namche Bazaar, Overnight in the Khumbu
Sunrise Flight to Kalapatthar and Everest Base Camp Area, Return to Kathmandu
Cultural Experience in Namche Bazaar
Namche Bazaar functioned as a working trading post long before it became a stop for climbers and trekkers. Sherpa traders once carried salt and wool across the Nepal Tibet border through this valley, and that history continues to shape the town today. The weekly Saturday market sells vegetables, yak cheese, and trekking gear, much as it always has.
Travelers walking through town will notice prayer flags strung between rooftops and small stupas positioned among the guesthouses. Old photographs on lodge walls document early Everest expeditions that passed through these same streets. Staying here for one night connects travelers to the same community that continues to supply most of the guides and porters working on Everest today, including several members of our own team who grew up in villages within a short distance of Namche.
Practical Tips From Our Guide Team
Years of operating this route have produced a short list of details that genuinely improve the experience:
- Request the earliest available departure slot, since afternoon flights carry a higher risk of delay
- Request a left side seat on the outbound Lukla leg, where the best mountain views are visible
- Pack a down jacket within easy reach, since Syangboche is often ten degrees colder than Kathmandu
- Download offline maps before departure, since mobile data connectivity in Namche is unreliable
- Confirm a private charter early if privacy is a priority, since shared flights fill quickly in peak season
- Carry a printed copy of travel insurance details, since phone signal in Namche cannot always be relied upon
None of these recommendations are complicated. However, overlooking them is usually what turns a smooth trip into a stressful one.
Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour Cost, 1 Night 2 Days
Two factors determine what travelers pay for this trip. The first is whether the booking is a shared group flight or a private charter. The second is group size, since a shared flight divides the fixed cost of the helicopter across everyone on board, which lowers the price per person. A private charter costs more overall, but it allows travelers to set the timing and choose exactly who is flying with them.
Group Joining Price by Group Size
| 1 person | US$ 2,650 |
| 2 people | US$ 2,550 |
| 3 people | US$ 2,490 |
| 4 people | US$ 2,470 |
| 5 or more people | US$ 2,450 |
Private Charter Price
| 1 person | US$ 8,900 |
| 2 people | US$ 8,200 |
| 3 people | US$ 7,850 |
| 4 people | US$ 7,600 |
| 5 people | US$ 7,450 |
Treat these figures as a starting point rather than a final quote, since both season and fuel costs affect pricing. Please check the current rates with our team before making a booking.
The price quoted usually includes the cost of the helicopter, the permits, the ground transfers, and one night’s stay at the lodge. It usually does not include any meals after breakfast, personal expenses, or travel insurance, all of which are described in the section that follows.
This trip costs more than the 1 Day tour for a clear reason: an additional night of lodging, an additional flight, and additional permit fees together increase the total cost. Most guests report that the difference was worthwhile once they completed the trip. Booking just before or after the busy spring and autumn periods can reduce the shared group rate slightly.
The final price may be influenced by a number of factors. Surcharges for fuel are sometimes introduced when fuel prices go up. If bad weather delays a flight by one day, passengers usually have to pay for an extra night’s accommodation. When people book either singly or in pairs, they are generally grouped with other guests who are leaving on similar dates, thus keeping the shared rate low. Passengers who would rather not share their helicopter can ask for a private charter quote instead.
Best Season for the 1 Night 2 Days Everest Helicopter Tour
Spring, March to May
We book the most during the spring season mainly since the weather conditions are more reliable at this time of year, with mornings generally staying clear and the rhododendron forests in the lower valleys close to Namche in full bloom. This period also matches the main climbing season on Everest, which means that visitors might see expedition teams when looking from the air.
Autumn, September to November
Autumn is almost as reliable as spring, since after the monsoon has finished the air clears and visibility improves. October generally provides the most consistent flying weather of the year and is therefore a good option for travelers who want clear skies.
Winter, December to February
Cold weather conditions occur in winter, although the skies are frequently brilliantly clear. Since fewer tourists book their trips during this period, Namche becomes quieter and the lodges have greater availability. When the mornings are clear, the snow on the surrounding peaks produces a sharp visual contrast at Kalapatthar. People who are flying during this season should take proper cold weather equipment with them.
Monsoon, June to August
We do not advise taking this trip during the monsoon season since cloud cover usually develops rapidly in the morning and this in turn raises the chance of delays or cancellations. People who have to travel at that time should book the first flight that is available and stay flexible with their plans.
For travelers who want clear skies, spring and autumn are the more dependable options.
1-Night, 2-Day Tour vs 1-Day Tour vs Full EBC Trek
The right choice typically depends on three factors: available time, budget, and physical fitness. The table below compares the three main options directly.
| Option | Duration | Overnight in Khumbu | Fitness Needed | Approx Cost From | Best For |
| 1 Day Heli Tour | 1 day | No | Very low | US$ 1,395 | Fastest possible option |
| Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour, 1 Night 2 Days | 2 days | Yes, 1 night | Low | US$ 2,450 | Depth without a long trek |
| Classic EBC Trek | 12 to 14 days | Yes, 10+ nights | High | US$ 1,270 | Full trekking experience |
If speed is the main concern, then the 1 Day tour is the obvious choice. If travelers would like to experience the trail themselves, the classic trek is still the most thorough option, on the condition that they have both the necessary time and fitness. For those who want something with real depth without giving up weeks from their schedule, this 2 day package is generally the best match.
A significant number of past guests use this trip as an introduction to the region, later returning for the full trek once they have experienced the Khumbu firsthand. Other travelers select this option because a multi day trek is not currently realistic for them, whether due to time, fitness, or both, which is an equally valid reason to book it.
Weight Limit and Safety on the Everest Helicopter Tour
At an altitude of about 4,000 meters the air is thin enough to prevent helicopters from lifting as much weight as they can at lower elevations, and it is this one factor that influences almost every operational decision concerning flights near Kalapatthar.
Below 4,000 meters, our aircraft can carry up to five passengers plus the pilot, with a total weight limit near 500 kilograms including luggage. Above that altitude, the limit drops to about 250 kilograms. That is the reason why flights heading towards Kalapatthar sometimes split a group between two smaller loads instead of taking all the people at once.
We use the Eurocopter AS350 B3e and the Mi-8 MTV-1, both of which have a well-established record of operational performance at high altitudes. On each flight emergency oxygen is carried together with a pulse oximeter for monitoring the oxygen levels of the passengers. Our pilots have certification specifically for flying at high altitudes as well as their standard commercial licenses.
All departures start with a safety briefing that includes information on emergency procedures and weight checks. When a guest feels unwell during the night in Namche, our ground team acts quickly. Since Namche’s elevation is considerably lower, this specific risk is already kept to a minimum.
The following safety points are worth understanding before booking:
- Weather can require a delay or reschedule, and this decision always takes priority
- Weight limits above 4,000 meters are enforced without exception
- Emergency oxygen and pulse oximeters are standard equipment on every flight
- Travelers with heart conditions or high blood pressure should consult a doctor beforehand
- Altitude sickness risk is low on this trip compared to the full trek, though it is not eliminated
Detailed Itinerary of
Day 1: Kathmandu to Lukla to Namche Bazaar, Overnight in the Khumbu
6:00 AM, Hotel Pickup A private vehicle collects travelers from their Kathmandu hotel and transfers them to Tribhuvan International Airport. Our team manages check in and paperwork before boarding.
7:00 AM, Flight to Lukla The helicopter departs and heads east over terraced hillsides and forested ridges. This leg to Lukla typically takes forty to fifty minutes.
8:00 AM, Refueling Stop at Lukla A short stop at Tenzing Hillary Airport, lasting fifteen to twenty minutes, allows the aircraft to refuel. This is often the first opportunity for close range mountain photography.
8:30 AM, Onward Flight to Namche Bazaar or Syangboche From Lukla, the helicopter continues toward Namche, following roughly the same valley trekkers walk over two days on foot. Landing typically occurs at the small Syangboche airstrip, just above town.
Afternoon, Free Time in Namche Bazaar The remainder of the day is unscheduled. Travelers can walk into Namche, visit the Sherpa Culture Museum, and browse the town’s gear shops and bakeries. A short climb to a nearby viewpoint offers the first proper mountain view before dinner.
Evening, Overnight in the Khumbu Travelers check into a lodge in Namche or near Syangboche for dinner and the night. Most guests describe this overnight stay as the part of the trip they remember most, and it is the primary feature that distinguishes this version from the faster one day tour.
Day 2: Sunrise Flight to Kalapatthar and Everest Base Camp Area, Return to Kathmandu
Early Morning Wake-Up The departure in the early morning takes place before sunrise because the cloud cover over the Khumbu usually increases during the morning, and it is important to fly early for both safety and because of the better light.
Helicopter Flight Toward Kalapatthar A short flight carries travelers to Kalapatthar, at 5,545 meters, one of the closest points to Everest reachable by helicopter. Landing directly at Base Camp is generally reserved for the spring expedition season, so Kalapatthar serves as the primary landing point on this trip.
Photography and Viewing When travelers move onto the open ridge at Kalapatthar, the mountains of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Pumori are seen nearby. The Khumbu Glacier extends out below in sharp blue and white folds. Although the guides keep this point very short, they make sure it is not rushed and that there is enough time for the visitors to take proper photographs.
Breakfast at Hotel Everest View From Kalapatthar, the helicopter continues to Hotel Everest View, at 3,880 meters, among the highest hotels on earth. Breakfast is served with a full view of the Himalayan skyline, and many of the strongest photographs from this trip are taken here.
Return Flight to Kathmandu A second short refueling stop occurs at Lukla, followed by approximately forty five minutes of flying back to Kathmandu. Most flights land at the domestic terminal by early afternoon.
Drop Off at Your Hotel A private vehicle returns travelers to their hotel, concluding two days that include one genuine night in the mountains and a set of photographs that reflect more than a same day flyover.

Good To Know
The effect of altitude varies from person to person, and previous experience at high altitude gives only limited help in predicting how someone will react on a particular journey. This trip is less risky than the full trek since on day one most of the time is spent below 3,440 meters, allowing the body time to get used to the conditions before the short period at higher altitude on day two.
There are some habits that are truly useful: travelers must drink more water than they think is necessary during both days, should avoid alcohol the night before their flight to Kalapatthar, and should keep their dinner in Namche fairly light. It is common to experience a mild headache or a bit of shortness of breath at this altitude and such symptoms usually disappear within an hour or two. However, if the symptoms continue or get worse, travelers should promptly inform their guide rather than waiting to see if they get better on their own.
The guides have a pulse oximeter and check on the guests during the night, with a special focus on those who say they are unwell. This procedure is a standard feature of the way we run this trip and has therefore led to a steady safety record on this route over the years.
Nepal requires specific permits for travel within Sagarmatha National Park, including helicopter landings. Our team manages this paperwork on your behalf, though a few personal documents should be prepared in advance.
- A valid passport with at least six months of remaining validity

Frequently Asked Questions
General Question that clinet ask to Us for this EBC Helicopter Tour.
What is the difference between the 1 day and the 2 days 1 night Everest helicopter tour?
The one-day tour leaves and returns to Kathmandu on the same morning without stopping over overnight; the two days, one night version includes a night in Namche Bazaar, which turns a short visit into something that resembles a real stay in the Khumbu.
Where do you sleep overnight during the 2 day Everest helicopter tour?
Most guests stay in a lodge in Namche Bazaar itself, at 3,440 meters. Some travelers instead stay near the Syangboche airstrip, at a similar elevation. Both locations are within the Everest region.
Can I land directly at Everest Base Camp on this tour?
Direct landings at Base Camp are generally reserved for the spring expedition season. This tour lands at Kalapatthar instead, which is nearby and offers an arguably better view of Everest.
How much does the 1 night 2 days Everest helicopter tour cost per person?
Shared group pricing starts around US$ 2,450 per person for groups of five or more. Private charters range from approximately US$ 7,450 to US$ 8,900 per person, depending on group size.
Is the 2 day Everest helicopter tour safe for children and older travelers?
This tour is generally safe for both groups. There is no strict age limit on this tour, though young children should travel with a parent or guardian, and travelers managing a heart condition should consult their doctor beforehand.
What happens if the weather is bad on the second day?
We reschedule the flight for the next available window at no additional cost when one is available, or in rarer cases offer an alternative arrangement. Safety always takes priority over the fixed schedule.
Do I need travel insurance for this tour?
Travel insurance is not legally required, but we strongly recommend it. A policy that includes helicopter rescue coverage provides real financial protection should an emergency descent become necessary.
How far in advance should I book?
We recommend booking two to four weeks in advance, particularly for spring or autumn departures, since helicopter availability becomes limited during peak season.
Can this tour be combined with the Everest Base Camp Trek instead of flying both directions?
Yes. Many travelers walk part of the trail and fly the remaining distance to save time, often trekking two days to Namche before switching to the helicopter toward Kalapatthar. Contact our team to discuss this option.
What is the maximum group size for a shared helicopter departure?
Each helicopter carries a maximum of five passengers, in addition to the pilot. Larger groups are divided across multiple aircraft flying the same schedule.
What is your cancellation and rescheduling policy?
Weather related delays are rescheduled at no additional cost when a later slot is available. Cancellations made outside our standard notice window may result in partial loss of the deposit. Full terms are available in our booking and payment policy.
Is there mobile signal or Wifi in Namche Bazaar?
Most lodges have paid Wifi, but the connection is usually slow and drops out in the evening. The local SIM card (Ncell) usually works fine in Namche but starts to weaken beyond Syangboche.
What is the best overnight helicopter package to Everest for first time visitors?
This particular package is well suited to first time visitors, since it requires no trekking background or specific fitness level. Our guides manage the entire trip, from the initial Kathmandu pickup through drop off the following day.
