Take a leisurely drive back from Thimphu that lasts a little more than an hour. Take a break along the way if you have not already visited any of the attractions that lie along the way.
Paro, in contrast to the more dynamic town of Thimphu, is a fertile valley that charms its visitors with its serene and rural environment. Green open spaces, terraced fields, and meandering rivers define a calm landscape that is complemented by the enormous mountains that enclose the valley.
The rich history and deep religious significance of Paro lay in the numerous ancient monasteries, temples, and Bhutanese villages that dot the landscape. A relaxed and serene environment pervades the valley that welcomes people to relax and enjoy nature and culture.
Begin your Paro tour with the National Museum of Bhutan located in the Ta Dzong, a former watchtower, before moving on towards the Paro Rinpung Dzong, the imposing fortress-monastery with some of the finest examples of Bhutanese architecture.
Inside its walls, visitors get a chance to see lavishly decorated halls, intricate frescoes, and sacred religious objects. The dzong is both an administrative complex as well as a place for religious festivals. Down the street and across the wooden cantilever bridge is the charming town of Paro.
Afternoon excursion to the neighboring farmhouse a few minutes drive from the road. Quaint farmhouses scattered across the fields and on the hill sides add natural beauty to the landscape of the Paro Valley.
The two-or-three-storied Bhutanese farmhouses with the ornate-painted outer walls and the lintels look handsome and are traditionally built with not a single nail. The same pattern is found in each house.

3-Star HotelDay 5: Paro – Taktsang Monastery / Tiger’s Nest Temple Hike

Make a spine-tingling hike up to Taktsang, also known as Tiger’s Nest Temple, Bhutan’s famous landmark. Picturesquely perched on the face of a cliff, the sacred monastery is a cultural heritage in its truest sense and the mythical retreat of the 8th-century Buddhist sage Guru Rinpoche, the one who brought Tibetan Buddhism to Bhutan.
The hike is preceded by a drive to the 2,600m trailhead. Climbing up oak and pine forest, cool nature and wonderful views of the Paro Valley open up.
After the steep ascent up, arrive at a cafeteria for a break with a stunning Taktsang view. The trek continues with prayer flags, wheels, shrines, and waterfalls, introducing the religious aspect of the region. The last stretch of the ascent is steeper with stone steps, but the excitement of arriving at Taktsang keeps you going.
The 2-4 hour climb, factor in exploration time, and you have a whole-day excursion. Hike back down with a stopover at a local farmhouse with a true taste of Bhutan life. At the trek beginning, horses for riding can carry you up the initial vantage point, or the Cafeteria.

Perched dramatically on the side of a sheer cliff 900 metres (2,950 feet) above the floor of the Paro Valley, the Tiger’s Nest is Bhutan’s most photographed and enduring religious monument. It is built on the spot where Guru Rinpoche is believed to have landed on the back of a tigress when he flew in with the intention of vanquishing the local demon, Singye Samdrup.
Having vanquished the demon, Guru Rinpoche is believed to have spent three uninterrupted months in the practice of meditation in a nearby gompa.
Once you have arrived at Tiger’s Nest is an opportunity to see the cave where the Guru Rinpoche meditated and the extensive complex of Lhakhangs (chapels) filled with images, murals, chortens, and a holy spring.

Following the visit, hike for around 90 minutes down to the main access road, where your automobile is waiting to transport you back to Paro. Dinner tonight is with your guide.

Best time for Cultural Tour of Bhutan
The perfect period you choose can make a big difference to your overall experience. Here’s an insight into what each season has to offer so you’ll be able to plan out your trip according to your taste. Take a general look at what each season offers to help understand when to actually plan your trip.
Spring (March to May):
Many travelers like this period. From the mountains, blazing blooms of rhododendrons block their view, and the season promises agreeable weather. Spring is replete with festivals, among them the popular Paro Tsechu.
Autumn (September to November):
In autumn, you’ll experience lovely, clear, sunny days that offer absolutely stunning mountain views. Take pleasure in the peaceful trekking trails and unwind at festivities such as entertaining Thimphu Tsechu during this time.
Summer (June to August):
Because of the monsoon season, this time is likely to experience some rain. The sunshine may or may not reach you, but you get the fresh green landscapes and smaller crowds. It would be cheaper for you to do so as well.
Winter (December to February):
Such scenic beauty of snow-covered landscapes and days lying in the mountains in silence is what you love; then winter is the right time to visit. Although many areas are quite cold, Punakha has a comfortable climate and is well worth a visit.
Quick Tip: Spring and autumn are special seasons that both compel good weather and participation in Bhutan’s festivals.
