Major Attraction of Kailash Mansarovar Tour From Lhasa
Mount Kailash
A 6,638-meter-tall spiritual mountain which is located in the Tibet region is the major attraction of the Kailash Mansarovar Tour. This location has become a must-see on many bucket lists due to its natural beauty and its status as a sacred site for devotees of Buddhism, Bon, Jainism, and Hinduism. The 52-kilometer circumambulation of the mountain is thought to offer spiritual enlightenment and cleanse sins, no matter what the religion followed.
Visitors can encounter the magnificent view of Kailash Mountain’s unique four faces, which are surrounded by stunning landscapes, lakes and vibrant prayer flags. The Diamond shape of this snow-capped mountain is awe-spiring to watch. Therefore, every year, thousands of visitors come to visit this place to witness the divine beauty and spiritual purpose.
Lake Manasarovar
One of the highest-altitude lakes located in Tibet, Lake Mansarovar, lies at an altitude of approximately 4,590 meters (15,100 feet). According to Hindu mythology, it was made by Lord Brahma, the creator god, and is frequently connected to the divine.
Anyone who visits this wonderful location will be in awe of the crystal clear view of the Mansarovar Lake, the surrounding mountain scenery, and the lake’s reflection.
This impressive lake is popular not only for its natural beauty but also for its religious importance. During a visit to Kailash, many pilgrims gather at this place to perform rituals and traditional activities. Meditating by the side of the lake also helps spiritual seekers find inner peace.
Rakshastal and Gauri Kund: Where Myths and Nature Converge
Rakshastal is believed to have originated from the demon king Ravana, a prominent figure in Hindu mythology. In contrast, he was meditating around Mt Kailash to impress lord Shiva to grant him special power. Associated with the Ravan Rakshastal is never looked upon as an auspicious place, and pilgrims are discouraged from either taking a bath or drinking water from it.
Researchers also claim that this lake contains salt, which makes it undrinkable for humans. There is also a tale that Ravana was on his way to Mt. Kailash, crossing Gauri Kund and seeing Parbati( Lord Shiva’s Wife) from a distance. It was only after he created a Rakshastall and took a dip in it that and started feeling for her. There due to the nature of the Rakshastal, nobody takes a bath and is discouraged from doing so during Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.
Gauri Kund on the Mt. Kailash is a small pond which belongs to the wife of Lord Shiva. It is a personal space in which she used to bathe. It is also believed that at GauriKund, she created the lord Ganesha using dirt on her body. Some believe that Lord Parbati still visits this place, so the personal space should not be touched or occupied.
No matter what the story is behind the Raksha Taal and Gauri Kund visiting this palace during the Kailash Mansarovar Tour adds to the beauty of the trip.
Chiu Gompa Monastery
Another popular destination for pilgrims and tourists on the Kailash Mansarovar Tour is Chu Gompa Monastery. This well-known monastery, which is close to Mansarovar Lake and Mount Kailash, is well-known for the cave where Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) spent the final seven days of his life. There’s a little statue of him now. The monastery’s breathtaking view of Gurla Mandhata Peak (7,694m) and Mansarovar Lake is its outstanding feature. Mount Kailash is also visible on a clear day.
Dolma La Pass
Visitors can experience adventure at Dolma La Pass, which is 5,630 meters (18,471 ft) above sea level. Everyone starting the Kailash Tour is left with a lasting image of the complicated nature of the climb and the requirement for extreme physical and mental strength to tackle such a challenging mountain route. Even though it is challenging, if you have the faith that the toughest of the job can be easily done.
Also, before reaching the pass, there is a big rock next to the path, The Dolma Rock, which is much worshipped by the pilgrims and smeared with butter on which money is stuck and decorated with Prius. Once you reach the Dolma Pass, you can see the panoramic view of Mt. Kailash Gauri Kund, surrounding Himalayan peaks, colorful prayer flags, the mountain range’s glaciers and more.
Yam Dwar
Yam Dwar is a small temple-like gate located near Kailash Mountain. You can see the three bells hanging inside the gate, which the visitors ring in the name of Tri Deva – Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. This Yam Dwar is circumambulated three times in a clockwise direction, and it is believed that passing through this gate will take you directly to heaven. There are numerous myths and legends about this place, and hearing the stories from the guide and the locals is pretty interesting during the Kailash Mansarovar Tour.
Tibetan Culture and Local Communities
Tibetan people are deeply religious, with nearly 78% following Buddhism. Due to its remoteness and geographical factors, ancient Tibetan culture and traditions can still be seen in today’s generation.
Unique Tibetan lifestyle, customs and festivals, such as Tibetan New Year/Losar, Saga Dawa Festival, Shoton Festival, and Nagchu Horse Racing Festival, can be experienced by the visitors during the Kailash Mansarovar Tour. Additionally, Tibetan food and their friendly greetings make your trip more memorable.
Saga Dawa Festival
Every year, during the fourth month of the lunar calendar, the Saga Dawa celebration is held. In remembrance of Buddha Sakyamuni, whose birth, enlightenment, and nirvana all occurred in the same month, Tibetans celebrate the Saga Dawa Festival for a whole month.
Those who celebrate this Saga Dawa festival are not allowed to eat meat, so they only consume fruits and vegetables. Another beauty of this festival is Tibetan people; they free the cats and animals from slaughter and also give alms in the park.
The celebrations in every Tibetan house and the rituals performed in the monastery are great to witness if you visit during the festival time.
Religious Importance of Kailash Mansarovar Tour
For many people worldwide, the Kailash Mansarovar Tour, which is well-known for the stunning landscapes in the Tibet region, also has spiritual importance. This sacred location is a must visit destination for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and practitioners of Bon due to old traditions and spiritual beliefs.
Let’s look into how each religion performs its rituals and traditions and what beliefs and faith it has in this sacred site.
Hindu Beliefs and Practices
For Hindus, the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage is one of the holiest rites as they believe that this is the home of their lord Shiva and Parvati, Ganesha and Kartikeya, Nandi the Bull and other deities. According to Hindu mythology, Shiva is said to reside in this mountain, and you can find that mount Kailash is mentioned in the Hindu epics Ramayana and Mahabharata.
Hindu pilgrims believe that bathing in this sacred lake would purify their souls, cleanse them of their sins, and bring about a sense of revival. Due to this, this lake is also called the “ Lake of Consciousness.” Due to an ancient tradition, Hindus travel to the Kailash Mansarovar during the full moon to engage in spiritual activities such as puja, rites, and sacred baths.
Buddhist Significance
According to Buddhism, Mount Kailash is the universe’s spiritual center. According to their belief, the renowned Tibetan yogi Milarepa once resided here. He then ascended Mount Kailash using his spiritual practice and meditation. After his return, he cautioned others against ascending this spiritual mountain since he knew a secret that the public shouldn’t know.
As per their religion, circulating this mountain in a clockwise direction will help to cleanse the soul and achieve enlightenment. So they perform Kora, which means “circumambulation” or “revolution,” during their visit to Kailash Mansarovar Tour.
Jain Perspectives
Jains also consider Mount Kailash sacred. For them, Jain scriptures state that the first Jain Tirthankara (a religious teacher; there are 24 Tirthankaras in Jainism) named Rishbhdev achieved “nirvana,” or “enlightenment,” on Mount Ashtapada, which is close to Mount Kailash.
Bonpo Traditions
The “Bonpos,” or followers of Bon, believe that the religion was first practiced in a kingdom named Zhangzhung, which is situated near Mount Kailash in the Himalayas. According to Bonpos, Bon was taken to Tibet after initially being taken to Zhangzhung. According to Bonpos, Bon was founded by the Buddha Shenrab Miwo.
Why is Mount Kailash unclaimed?
It is the truth, not a myth. In Kalyug, Mount Kailash is a mountain that no person has ever scaled.
The reason for this is that it is the home of God Shankar, who is Shiva in human form. There, Lord Shankar currently resides with Devi Parvati and Lord Ganesh. Additionally, humans are not allowed to ascend Kalyug Adarm due to its extreme height.
Inexplicable things happened to several non-believers who attempted to climb it; they were either discovered dead or never found at all. And the wise ones gave up and went back to their houses.
Anyone who approaches this peak for darshan can sense Shiva’s presence and sanctity with ease. Any permitted ascent is practically impossible because this area and its visitors are being monitored. Since the Chinese government banned climbing Mount Kailash, it is now even impossible to try.

Today you will have a full day for Lhasa exploration. Here’s a glimpse of the must-see highlights for the day:
Drepung Monastery:
Visit the famous Drepung Monastery first thing in the morning. It was originally Tibet’s biggest monastery and served as a significant training ground for Buddhist monks for many years. Drepung was a key component of Tibetan Buddhism and was constructed in the 15th century. At its greatest, it accommodated thousands of monks. Explore its striking halls, which are embellished with priceless treasures, elaborate thangkas, and old murals. The main assembly hall, where monks still congregate for prayers, is worth exploring. It is recommended that guests observe in silence and take in the enthralling spirit of this special ceremony.
Jokhang Temple:
Your afternoon continues with a visit to Jokhang Temple, considered the most sacred site in Tibetan Buddhism. Located in the heart of Lhasa’s Old Town, this UNESCO World Heritage Site houses a revered statue of Jowo Sakyamuni, an image of the Buddha believed to have been blessed during his lifetime. Stroll through the temple’s beautifully decorated halls and prayer rooms, adorned with colorful prayer flags, flickering butter lamps, and spiritual chants echoing through the air. Afterward, explore the bustling Barkhor Street that encircles the temple—a vibrant pilgrimage route where you’ll witness devotees circumambulating the temple in deep prayer. Guest HouseDay 11: Visit Chiu Gompa (4,590m) - Manasarovar Circumambulation by Vehicle - Drive to Darchen (4,575m)
The morning of Day 12 of our incredible journey starts with a visit to Chiu Gompa, an old monastery perched 4.590 meters above sea level on a rocky slope. This peaceful location provides guests with a peaceful sanctuary for introspection and meditation while overlooking the immaculate waters of Lake Manasarovar. Surrounded by stunning panoramic views of the glittering lake set against the towering Himalayan hills, the monastery itself is steeped in spiritual significance. The ambiance encourages reflection, which enables visitors to fully engage with the spiritual energy of the area.
The adventure continues with a vehicle circumambulation, or parikrama, of the revered Lake Manasarovar after the visit to Chiu Gompa. The trip around the lake is a sensory extravaganza, featuring breathtaking scenery where the bright blue waters of Manasarovar shimmer in the Himalayan sun, reflecting the majestic Gurla Mandhata and other neighboring mountains. A variety of species, including migratory birds like cranes and geese that swarm to the lake’s shores, can be spotted by nature lovers. Visitors will get a taste of the traditional way of life in this high-altitude area as the vehicle glides past little villages and mobile camps where Tibetan herders tend to their yaks and sheep.
As part of the circumambulation, pilgrims who consider Lake Manasarovar as a site of spiritual purification pause briefly at sacred spots along the lake’s edge in addition to taking in the stunning sights. Every stop offers the chance for quiet reflection, which deepens the connection to the present spiritual journey.
Once the lake circulation is finished, we will continue on to Darchen, which is the starting point for the well-known Mount Kailash Kora hike and is located at 4,575 metres. Mesmerizing views of Mount Kailash’s majestic bulk may be seen in the distance as you drive through the untouched terrain. The environment changes from wide-open lake views to bleak, dramatic landscapes where stone cairns built by pilgrims as symbols of respect and prayer flags flapping in the breeze blend together with huge open plains.
By late afternoon or early evening, we will reach Darchen, a community packed with pilgrims and trekkers getting ready for their individual treks around Mount Kailash. This modest town is the ideal setting for the evening’s acclimatization because it symbolizes the spirit of commitment and exploration.
The harmonious atmosphere of Darchen as the day draws to a close, enhanced by the waving prayer flags and the silhouette of Mount Kailash watching over the area, makes for a perfect conclusion to a day full of spiritual discovery and breathtaking sights. As adventurers prepare for the difficulties that lie ahead, this special day marks a significant transition into the following stage of the trip.

3-Star HotelDay 12: Drive from Darchen - Tarboche (4,675m) - Trek to Diraphuk (4,890m) (Begain Kailash Kora)
On Day 12 of our trip, we set out on a life-changing hike that started with a short but important drive from Darchen to Tarboche, which is 4,675 meters above sea level. The 8-kilometer drive took around 30 minutes to complete.
As we arrived at Tarboche, the official entryway to the sacred Kailash Kora, we were filled with a sense of spiritual significance and expectation. The enormous prayer flagpole that towers over Tarboche, which is well-known for hosting the yearly Saga Dawa festival, represents rebirth and the hopes of all the pilgrims who pass through.
When we arrived at Tarboche, we were welcomed by the striking Yama Dwar, also known as the Gateway of the Gods. This is a symbolic entryway where many pilgrims pause to perform prayers and rituals before beginning their journey around Mount Kailash. As we were ready to start our journey toward Diraphuk, the atmosphere came alive with awe and a sense of purpose.
Trekking from Tarboche to Diraphuk, which is 4,890 meters above sea level, takes 6 to 7 hours and is marked by a steady climb across a broad valley with stunning scenery all around. Although the trail is relatively difficult, it gives breathtaking views of the famous Mount Kailash, which creates an atmosphere that encourages curiosity and introspection. The sound of chants and spinning prayer wheels filled the air as we hiked, giving the area a distinctively supernatural feeling.
We followed the revered Lha Chu River along the trail, its peaceful waters flowing peacefully next to us. As we approached Diraphuk, we were rewarded with breathtaking views of Mount Kailash’s north face. Considered one of the holiest locations, the view of the mountain, which is rich in spirituality and tradition, was incredibly emotional. Mani stones, which were beautifully engraved with prayers, were also used to decorate the track. These stones were a moving reminder of the devoted pilgrims who had walked the same route.
We checked into the modest teahouses in Diraphuk, a tiny community located away at the base of Mount Kailash’s north face. In addition to providing shelter, it also provided the closest and most breathtaking views of the sacred mountain. Following our arrival, we had straightforward yet filling meals made by the teahouse workers while taking some time to relax and adjust to the high altitude. We gathered outdoors at the end of the day to watch a magnificent sunset wash over Mount Kailash, which was adorned with scarlet and gold peaks.
Essential Notes for the Trek
- In order to reduce the risk of altitude sickness, take a short pause and stay hydrated while keeping in mind the altitude.
- Even though it was usually comfortable during the day, the weather may change quickly, with evening temperatures dropping considerably, so prepare appropriately.
- Aware of local traditions, make sure to preserve the sanctity of the area by refraining from making the insulting gesture of pointing with our fingers at Mount Kailash.

Morning Trek: Diraphuk to Dolma-La Pass (5,660m)
One of the hardest, or perhaps more accurately, difficult days for the Kailash Mansarovar tour will be today. Therefore we will start our trek early in the morning to capitalize on favorable weather conditions. From Diraphuk, the trail climbs sharply as you begin, passing through glacial moraines and rugged terrain. The height and the thin air make this ascent particularly difficult.
What You’ll See:
North Face of Mount Kailash: This holy mountain is illuminated by the first rays of morning, producing breathtaking views that are quite unforgettable.
Gauri Kund: A holy lake that is thought to be where Goddess Parvati bathes, giving your trip a more spiritual feel.
Dolma-La Pass: This pass, which is marked with vibrant prayer flags, is the trek’s highest and most respected landmark. It is a meaningful place for observation and prayer since pilgrims frequently leave behind memories of their travels.
Tips for Crossing the Dolma La Pass:
Pace Yourself: Always walk at your own pace and slowly to reduce the symptoms of altitude sickness and to acclimate your body according to the altitude.
Rest Wisely: When you feel that your body wants to rest, take brief breaks. Always stay hydrated, keep an eye on your health, and most importantly let your tour guide know right away if you’re having any problems.
Warm cloth: You can experience cold and strong wind so make sure to wear appropriate clothing.
Afternoon Trek: Dolma-La Pass to Dzutulphuk (4,790m)
Duration: 4–5 hours
The descent from Dolma-La Pass is steep and requires careful navigation, particularly on rocky and occasionally icy paths. However, as you make your way down, the terrain gradually becomes more manageable, leading you toward the lush surroundings of Dzutulphuk.
What You’ll See:
Landscape Changes: Experience a transformation in scenery from the stark, rocky expanse at high altitude to vibrant pastures and valleys.
Mani Stones: Look out for stones engraved with Tibetan prayers, which are a common sight along the trail.
Yaks and Nomads: You may encounter traditional nomadic herders with their yak caravans, providing a glimpse into the rich cultural tapestry of the region.
Arrival at Dzutulphuk
Dzutulphuk, translating to “miracle cave,” holds spiritual significance as the meditation site of the revered Tibetan saint, Milarepa. Upon arrival, you can relax at the teahouse or lodge and savor a simple dinner with fellow trekkers.
Key Attractions in Dzutulphuk:
Milarepa’s Cave: A small shrine dedicated to the saint, this site invites reflection and spiritual contemplation.
Breathtaking Views: After a strenuous day of hiking, the peaceful surroundings and neighboring mountains provide an ideal atmosphere for observation.
Essential Notes for the Trek
- Altitude Considerations: The high altitude, particularly at Dolma-La Pass, can pose challenges. Stay hydrated, and avoid rushing through any sections.
- Weather Preparedness: Even in the summer, Dolma-La Pass is known for its chilly winds and potential snowfall, so be ready for erratic weather.
- Food and Accommodation: Basic facilities are available at Dzutulphuk, where you can enjoy simple meals and rest comfortably, though amenities are limited.
