Before undertaking the Kailash Mansarovar Tour/Yatra in Tibet, let’s first understand why this tour is important for visitors and pilgrims.
For Hindus: Mount Kailash is indeed a profound symbol in Hindu mythology, revered as the sacred home of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati (Adi Shakti. Together, they are considered the ultimate sources of creation and destruction in the universe. They believe that Mt. Kailash is the eternal link between the heavens, earth, and humanity.
Hindu Pilgrims undertake the ritual of circumambulating (called parikrama in Sanskrit) the Kailash mountain to absolve them of sins and bring liberation (moksha). The devotees of lord Shiva chant the mantras like “Om Namah Shivaya” to get a blessing from lord Shiva.
For Buddhists: For Tibetan Buddhists, Mount Kailash holds special significance as the home of Demchok (also called Chakrasamvara), a god representing the pinnacle of happiness. Demchok stands for the fusion of wisdom and compassion, two qualities that are necessary for enlightenment. According to pilgrims, the mountain offers a gateway to higher states of awareness by radiating strong spiritual vibrations.
Mount Kailash’s unique symmetrical shape is seen as a symbol in Buddhism itself. Also, renowned sage Milarepa, who meditated on this mountain and attained spiritual awakening, is linked to the mountain by Buddhists. Buddhists perform Circumambulation( Kailash Kora) by walking around the mountain clockwise according to the Buddhist tradition.
For Jain: According to Jainism, Rishabhdeva, the first Tirthankara, achieved enlightenment (moksha) and limitless knowledge (kevala jnana) at Mount Kailash. By practicing self-control, renunciation, and non-violence (ahimsa), Tirthankaras—enlightened beings—have transcended the cycle of birth and death.
Another name for Mount Kailash is Astapad, which translates to “eight steps,” signifying the successive phases of spiritual development necessary to achieve enlightenment. For individuals who want to get closer to the teachings of the Tirthankaras, the mountain is an essential component of pilgrimages due to its sacred energy and relation to Jain cosmology.
For Bon: Mount Kailash, known as Tise in the Bon tradition, is believed to be the seat of the deity Sipaimen, a protective god revered in Bon cosmology. Mount Kailash in Bon is associated with the Nine Ways of Bon, the core teachings of the religion. Each face of the mountain is said to represent one of these spiritual paths, offering wisdom and clarity to those who undertake the sacred pilgrimage.

First, let us clarify what the Kora means. The act of walking about a place of religious significance is called “Kora.” During the Kailash Mansarovar tour, we will circulate the holy Mount Kailash; therefore, this tour is also called the Kailash Kora Trek. Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon religious pilgrims perform the Kora when they visit this sacred place according to their traditions.

The months of May through June and September through October are the greatest times of year to visit Kailash Mansarovar. The climate is nice during this time of year, with daily highs of 5°C to 15°C and nighttime lows of freezing. Because of the generally clear skies and good visibility, trekking becomes less difficult and more pleasurable.
The strong sunshine keeps you on course and adds to the splendor of the surroundings. However, be aware that April through June are generally busier, so if you’d rather have a more peaceful experience, September through October would be a better option.
Kailash Kora trek in the winter is avoided, or it is called off-season, because of the potential high risk of altitude sickness, sudden weather change, heavy snowfall and slippery trails.
Note: The Saga Dawa Festival, which commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and death of Gautama Buddha, takes place in June or July, which is when some tourists prefer to trek. For Hindus, July and August are the sacred months of Shravan, which is devoted to Lord Shiva.

Therefore, before heading for the Kailash Mansarovar, it is necessary for you to maintain fitness and should be careful about your health conditions. During the Kailash Parikrama, tourists can choose to rent a horse or a personal porter. Since trekking during Kailash Kora is a strenuous journey that demands good physical stamina, this might be an excellent way to ease the physical strain.
Planning is crucial for this. You can choose to use these services when you make your reservations for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra or when you arrive in Darchen, where the parikrama begins. Walking will be your only option after you leave Darchen, though, as you won’t be able to hire porters or horses. Making this choice in advance guarantees a more comfortable and seamless pilgrimage experience.
Please note that the cost of hiring a personal porter or horse is an extra expense. These charges are not included in the Kailash Mansarovar tour package and will need to be covered out-of-pocket. The investment, however, can be invaluable for those seeking additional support and comfort on this spiritually enriching but physically demanding journey.
