Trip Overview
“The best way to experience nature is on foot.” – Muir
Tsum Valley Trek is one of the famous off-the-beaten-path trek located in the Manaslu Region which is on the border of Nepal and Tibet. This is a beautiful valley with the backdrop of mountains including Shringi Himal, Langju Himala and Ganesh Himal range in Tibetan and Nepali cultural regions.
This trek is good for those who would prefer to avoid altitude sickness since this trek takes you to the highest point which is at Mu Gumba the altitude is 3700m.
The Tsum Valley is divided into two distinct sections: Lower Tsum Valley covers the areas between Lokpa and Chumling while the Upper part covers Chhekampar to Nile and Chule. This hidden paradise is famous for its relatively quiet area and is often called ‘The Last Tibetan Village of Gorkha.
Previously, the Tsum Valley was closed to foreigners until the year 2008. However, what has blown the minds of many trekkers is its natural beauty which has made it to become so popular recently.
Tsum valley trekking begins from the capital city Kathmandu by using the means of the transportation up to Seti Khola or Machha Khola which is known to be the initial point of this trek.
Trekkers can either hire a private jeep or ride the local bus from the Gongabu bus station to reach Machha Khola. Lack of any airport in this specific area makes it impossible to travel via airlines, so the only mode of transport is by ground transport.
After arriving at Soti Khola or Machha Khola, you will be following the well-maintained dirt paths to rocky and uneven terrain of Budhi Gandaki river for several days with beautiful villages like Khorlabesi, Tatopani, Dovan, Yaru Bagar, Philim, Tekle Bhatti, Chisapani and Lokpa.
At Lokpa, the trail diverges: the lower trail offers one of the world’s popular treks- Manaslu Circuit Trek while the upper trail takes you to the isolated Tsum Valley. Along this fabulous trail, you get to cross through the dense forests, use several suspension bridges and a rock-suspended cantilever bridge before reaching Lokpa, Chumling and finally to Chhokampar.
Chhekampar is the doorway of the Upper Tsum valley which comprises Leru, Lama Gaon, Burji, Phurbe, Chule and Nile that deserve cultural tourism due to the cultural practices as well as the scenic view of the Himalayan mountains.
Next, we have to move to Chhekampar and then from Chhekampar we have to move towards the Nile and spend the night there and then the next day we have to move to the Mu Gompa which is the main attraction of this trek. After that, following the Mu Gompa visits, we will begin heading back to Machha Khola. Then we will take a bus or jeep and get back to Kathmandu. On this 13-days Tsum Valley trekking itinerary, you will spend the night in the traditional tea house of Tsum Valley which is owned by the local people of this region.
You will be greeted with the warm hospitality of the local people, get acquainted with Buddhism and Tibetan traditions, as well as enjoy the incredible nature. This trek is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful treks in Nepal and is highly recommended to everyone at least once in their lifetime.

Understanding How Challenging is Tsum Valley Trek
Even though this trek is not tough compared to other popular treks in Nepal, it still might be challenging for some people due to geographical location and some other reason. Here we have listed some of the main challenge that trekkers need to face during the Tsum Valley Trek:
Altitude:
Tsum Valley takes you to the highest altitude of Mu Gompa monastery, situated around 3,700 meters (12,139 feet) above sea level. While this altitude is not extremely high, altitude sickness can still trouble trekkers.
Terrain:
Due to the diverse landscape in Tsum Valley, the trail path is moderate to challenging. Trekkers need to walk through the ascend and descending uphill and in some it might be challenging to walk. So while walking in some sections walk carefully and we suggest our trekkers to have the trekking poles with them
Duration and Remote Location:
The Tsum Valley trek duration can be from 10 days to 18 days depending upon the itinerary you choose from the trekking agency. Spending a long duration in a remote area which is not affected by modernization might be a tough job for some people.
Weather:
During the peak season like spring and autumn season, the weather conditions are mostly predictable but during the season itβs almost next to predict the weather. Heavy rainfall affects the trekking routes and adds trouble to trek which can lead to injury.
Remoteness:
Tsum Valley trek is completely located in the remote part and due to lack of transportation trekkers can get the modern facilities here. Trekkers need to learn to live with basic facilities of accommodation and food.
How to Prepare Yourself for the Tsum Valley Trek?
Trekkers need to prepare in advance for the successful journey of the Tsum Valley trek. So for the good preparation below we have listed the main key points that you can follow
Research about Tsum Valley:

Get a Tourist Visa to Nepal:
Trekkers need to have a travel visa to enter Nepal for the Tsum Valley Trek. You can easily get the on-arrival visa after you land at Tribhuvan International Airport(TIA). Except for some countries, almost all countries can get the arrival visa after paying a fee in the immigration center. Your passport should have at least 6 months of validity from the date you enter in Nepal. Let’s see the cost of the visa that you need to pay after you land here in the airport.
Purchase Travel insurance:

Jeeps are a comfortable way to reach Machha Khola due to being off road in some places. Make sure to wear comfortable clothes, shoes and wear a mask.

Guest HouseDay 2: Trek from Maccha Khola to Jagat
Following breakfast in the early morning, the steep route will take you through farmland with sometimes steep ups and downs to finally reach Tharo Khola from where we cross the bridge to reach Khorla Besi.
Then, you will leave Khorla Besi far behind and come across Tatopani. Tatopani literally translates to hot water in Nepali and there are hot springs in Tatopani.
Now the valley that you are going to trek on starts to become relatively narrower and after that leads to the Budhi Gandaki River that has to be crossed through a suspension bridge again.
Following this, there is a stone staircase with erected prayer flags to get to Tharo Bharyang. You will proceed along a stone-displaced pathway to Jagat, a town located on the Budhi Gandaki Riverβs west side.
Note: The route to the Manaslu Circuit Trek is moderate and more accessible than another trek. However, as mentioned above, the old trail that used to be taken before the earthquake of ”Tatopani to Jagat” through Dobhan and Yurukhola is daring.

While proceeding towards Lokpa, we will get our permits for Tsum valley countersigned at the check post. One has to ascend a ridge over Salleri and move parallel to the river before reaching the Budhi Gandaki which has to be crossed through a long broad suspension bridge.
Carrying on with the hike; the valley widens as we proceed to Phillim. The trek throughout is a rather pleasant one. The Ekle Bhatti will be crossed where the trail is torn Tsum and Manaslu. When we hike, we will notice the welcome board, thus hiking to Lokpa.
Rainforests, plains, and rivers will also at some points cross our way, a few of them are the villages. The rivers start to confluence and get smaller as we encounter the Syar river coming from the Tsum valley. Our next move is to turn right and the trail moves ahead and finally reaches Lokpa village.
Lokpa village marks the start of the first village of the Tsum valley through which we get a stunning view of the Manaslu range. This village is secluded and is a Shambala of joy and contentment that Padmashamva anointed hundreds of years ago.

Today, We Continue descending through picturesque forests, cross three side streams on bridges, go around a huge bluff on the river, then travel steeply up on good, but exposed stairs.
After about 30 mins cross into a newly logged area of pines and rhododendrons; continue to ascend and the sub-soil becomes very steep.
Tsum Valley lies in the pitch-black premise waiting to entice any adventurer. Finally, reach the only Bhatti of Ghumlong (2130m) on the river. The trail directly ahead rises sharply up to Ripchet (2470m; Ripche) in one hour; the trail to Chumling (2360m) crosses Shiar Khola on a wooden bridge up.
It is not for the heart/diving – several natives have met their deaths while taking alcohol sticking to this track. Remember to go up to Chumling and visit the ancient gompa, homes, apple and pear gardens, clinics and appealing stony roads.
This is Buddhist agriculture and among the four prayer flags, you will see conical pine needle haystacks here. Accommodation will be at a lodge in Chumling.

Guest HouseDay 5: Trek from Chumling to Chhokangparo
From here on trails are lined with artistic chortens and mani walls with a thousand and one stone slabs carved with deities and prayers. A
relatively lighter day compared to the previous day, Go across the suspension bridge slightly to the east of the hotel and proceed through farmland of maize and potatoes. Houses are typical Tibetan with the guards of firewood on the roof but no flat roofs as it rains and snows here. Jump a huge slip where rocks and flood cleared the area even up onto the opposite bank, which claimed five victims in 1999; it is now overgrown with young trees.
Looking up the valley to the east there are superb views of the 7000m Ganesh Himal or long suspension bridges on the other side of the river, and up very high on the cliff is the village of Ripchet (2468m).
Lunch is perhaps feasible at Rainjham (2400m), a solitary bhatti with a barne enclosed with a courtyard. Pass the Serpu Khola River and rise for 2. Engaging and friendly people, physically six hours on a good but very exposed trail to upper Tsum and the large village of Chhokangparo 3010m where most houses are built of stone and have no iron roofs.
Here it expands into vast tracts of barley, maize, buckwheat and potato; but wheat the farmer no longer grows because of ‘hill bunt’ which blacks the heads of the grains and leads to an utter crop failure.
It is not uncommon to find herds of Thar grazing on the wild cliffs to the north, down to the field. Himalchuli (7893m) is visible in the southern valley below if the atmospheric conditions are good.

Guest HouseDay 6: Trek from Chhokangparo to Nile
Most people would not get altitude sickness when they reach 2800 meters, but actual altitude gain in these track notes above Chhokangparo exceeds the recommended 200m per day elevation gain for a safe trek.
Pay attention to early symptoms of AMS and be ready to acclimatize or descend if any of them occurs. Do take the time to wander the conjoined villages of Chhokang and Paro and trek northwards to a hermitage where Lama Kongchog passed away after 26 years of fasting.
The boy reincarnation of his child was discovered in the village which is depicted in Unmistaken Child; a winning documentary DVD available for purchase in Kathmandu. They are commonly seen around this area Thar. All the people around are very friendly but they communicate in a language called Tsumba which is related to Tibetan and they rarely speak Nepali and are not so fluent in talking to foreigners.
Proceed east up and down through several local villages and the toposhool, up over a range of chortens then down through Lamagaon (3202m) across the level agricultural fields that let a fine view of the crops and river to reach the large compound of the Rachen Gompa (3240m).
This nunnery is the sister monastery of the main Kathmandu Kopan Monastery, for the female monks or nuns. Hike up and pay a visit to Milarepa’s Cave (Piren Phu) which is known to be a place that the one who is attributed with the introduction of Buddhism to the country meditated. Currently the cave is undergoing a rather large scale renovation.
After the stream of Shiar Khola, cross the villages of Phurbe (3251m) and Pangdun (3258m) and before arriving at the village of Chhule (3347m) through Kani there is an extraordinary round-shaped chorten.
The children here all dressed in the Tibetan dressing gown namely chubas and there are many yaks. Proceed further north then turn west and cross the bridge and ascend to Nile (3361m; Nyile).
Both the villages are in traditional type of buildings with a provision of the livestock compartments in the houses and a roofed veranda for drying of the crops.

Guest HouseDay 7: Trek from Nile to Mu Gompa 3700m and back to Chhokangparo
Wake up early to start up a valley on the west bank, having morning light show on the cliffs on both sides, Yaks graze and a day carrying just a small load.
It will be good to start early for the up valley on the west bank with sunrise on the narrowing valley sides, yaks grazing and a day where you only carry a light load. The last steep ascent to the large Mu Gompa (3700m; Mugumba) is through barren Tibetan land, waving lines of chortens, and opening mountain sceneries.
This is one of the larger monasteries that houses over 100 monks and an old gompa that was toured by David Snellgrove (Himalayan Pilgrimage) in 1956. If time is still on your side you can continue to Dhephyudoma Gompa which is at 4000m still further west along an easy track.
On three sides colourful initial glimpses of the border with Tibet are possible and the routes together with commonly used eastern (Ngula Dhojyang or Mailatasachin Pass, 5093m) and the western (Thapla Bhanjyang, 5104m) passes are within the view.
Some people hike to Kalung (3820m). Visiting the passes for a day and having some glimpse of Tibetan culture. Kelps are huge seasonal yaks in all the azimuths, glaciers in east Lung-Drang, and high peaks everywhere.
Descend down valley through Chhule; pick up your rucksack and proceed as far as Phurbe, but do not cross the Shiar Khola at this point; cross a flat boulder-strewn plain to Rachen Gompa (3240m), where it is possible to take a look at the old gompa if wished. Camping is also available.
There is however more architectural interest in the older part of the nunnery. From this, population relativities signify that the majority of the families in the Tsum hold at least one family representative who is either a monk or a nun.
Carry on southwards until you get to a bridge that leads to the western side and then slopes down to Chhokangparo. Accommodations at ChokangParo will be in a lodge for the night.

Guest HouseDay 8: Trek from Chhokangparo to Gumba Lungdang
Continue down to the previous trail for 2 hours to reach Gho at 2485m where there is a small gompa.
Continue on the same path and take a steep descent on a nice but quite narrow trail to the left on the other side of the village passing by the Shiar Khola; cross it on a wooden bridge.
Proceed to Dhumje (Tumje) 2440 meters where there is a medical center for Tibetans which is also a school for herbal doctors. The track onwards climbs just behind the clinic and the view of this place looks very exotic or even incredible.
The path becomes less clear and rises very steeply through pines and rhododendrons then when it comes to a long walk along a steep slope the track starts to cross at a mani wall with prayer flags.
The track is unfixed and very slender. Finally at the pine forest is to find an uphill trail turn right and make a steep zigzag journey through huge silver pines to get to Gumba Lungdang (3200m) which is built on a ridge with small cells for nuns through the magnificent area of the beautiful rhododendrons above.
This gompa at Kola Sangu which has 40 nuns has a very hard and absorbing puja every night. In all directions that one looks at, the sight of mountains is incredible. Accommodation in Monastery’s dormitory room at Gumba Lungdang

Guest HouseDay 9: Day trip to Ganesh Himal Base Camp
Your guide will be necessary for this trip as the track is not well defined.
From the gompa, you can contour down to the nuns’ accommodation; you will have to descend on steep paths that are either abrasive with dust or soft and slippy with mud.
To get back on the lower track, carry on up the valley on a steep, indistinct track through the woodland.
From the village cross the Laudang Khola on a shaky wooden bridge and ascend steeply through principally virgin pine and rhododendron on the ridge. This part of the route can be described by the following features: there is a hut of rather primitive design in the kharka at the middle of the way up; after passing the kharka the track branches to the right behind a shed, then goes up the dry bend of birch and finally one comes out into the flat land behind the lateral moraine of the Toro Gompa glacier.
Carry on rising above the seasonal dwelling places of yaks and there rises a track on the moraine wall, which offers very nice views to the Cirque of mountains.
The camp is located somewhat in this area. The Ganesh Himal Base Camp (4200m) is approximately 4hrs of treks away from the starting points.
There is another base camp located at the eastern part of the glacier but it seems there is no direct trail between the two, so retrace back to Gumba Lungdang and be back in time to join the evening puja.
This day can be challenging for some due to altitude but the experience in the intact forest wilderness and the spectacular views make it such a great day. Sleeping in the dormitory room in Monastery in Gumba Lungdang.

Best Time for Tsum Valley Trek
The best time to go on the Tsum Valley Trek is from early October to November in the autumn season, and from March to April during the spring. During this season it becomes easier to predict the weather conditions and there will be less chance of rainfall. Also the moderate temperature and long sunlight makes it easier for trekkers to reach the destination.
Spring season( March to May): During this season the trail path is covered with the rhododendron flower in the forest area. It adds the beauty of the treks and trekkers can take beautiful photographs of blooming vibrant forest areas. You can expect greenery everywhere and the clear view of the mountain peak and the beautiful landscape. Itβs one of the best seasons to travel in Tsum Valley.
Autumn Season(early October to November): Autumn is another best time to trek in the Tsum Valley. Many trekkers prefer to trek in this season not only due to stable weather and moderate temperature but also due to opportunities to immerse in Nepalβs big festivals Dashain and Tihar.
Winter( December to February): The temperature drops significantly at high altitudes in the Tsum Valley during winter, and trekkers can expect extreme cold and occasional snow. While trekking is possible during this season, poor weather conditions and fog often limit visibility, making it difficult to get the best views of the mountains. However, in clear weather, trekkers can enjoy stunning mountain views, ideal for photography enthusiasts.
Monsoon/summer(June to August): Monsoon is not an ideal time to trek in the remote areas of the Tsum Valley due to high-risk factors such as floods, landslides, and wet, slippery paths. Additionally, mosquitoes and leeches can further complicate the trekking experience. The high temperatures can cause exhaustion at high altitudes, and heavy rainfall often obstructs the otherwise beautiful mountain views.

Communication and Internet
Even though Tsum Valley is located in a remote area of Nepal, there are wifi facilities inside the tea house. The connection may not be good everywhere so we suggest trekkers to purchase the local sim(Ncell or NTC) which you can easily buy here in Nepal for around $1. YOu can use the local sim for communication as well as for the mobile internet.
Tipping
Tipping is a common practice in the trekking industry here in Nepal. Trekkers typically give tips to their guide and porter based on the level of service provided.
