Trip Overview

The Tamangs make up one of the largest ethnic groups in the country. They live mainly in the hills north of Kathmandu, although you will find small settlements in the eastern and far west regions. According to some accounts, the Tamang ancestors were horse traders and cavalrymen from an invading Tibetan army who settled in Nepal. They are well known for their independence and suspicion of authority, probably caused by the fact that in the 19th century, they were relegated to low status and seriously exploited. The majority of Tamangs have been living outside of Kathmandu Valley for ages. They are also called Bhote, Lama, Murmi, Yolmo, Sain, etc. Meanwhile, the Tibetans called them Rongpa.

Tamang culture and traditions include the Tamang language. It is the fifth most spoken language in Nepal, and it is called cultural dress and social structure. Their typical song and dance style is also known as Tamang Selo. They are also famous for their typical musical Instrument, Damphu and Tungna. In the hills, they work mainly as farmers and laborers, and many of the ‘Tibetan’ souvenirs, carpets, and thangka (religious paintings on cotton) you see in Kathmandu are made by Tamangs. Tamang villages are mostly visited on a few famous trekking routes in Nepal. Tamang Heritage Trail was a specially designed trekking trail to show their village, culture, and Traditions.

Their religion is closely associated with Tibetan Buddhism, and the approach to a Tamang village is usually marked with a mani wall made up of prayer stones and flags engraved with mantras. The village entrance is sure to have a chorten (pagoda).
