Significance of Lumbini
The Cradle of Compassion: Where Siddhartha Gautama Began His Journey
On a full moon day in April/May in 623 BC, a queen called Maya Devi (Lumbini) delivered a child named Siddhartha Gautama in the quiet Sal forest. She is said to have held a branch of a Sal tree when the baby was born, and the newborn made seven steps, saying: This is my last birth. This holy moment was the beginning of the life of the Buddha. Nowadays, the exact place of birth is commemorated within the Maya Devi Temple, the primary religious venue of Lumbini and the heart of any pilgrimage.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site: Preserving Universal Value
In 1997, UNESCO declared Lumbini a World Heritage Site due to its high spiritual, historical and archaeological significance. The Citation proves that Lumbini is a real and worthwhile destination for the entire humanity. The site is well preserved, and excavations are still underway to provide valuable insights into the life and early development of Buddhism. The UNESCO status also reveals the collective responsibility of the world in order to conserve this peaceful and sacred site.
The Evolving Story: From Ancient Times to Modern Pilgrimage
Lumbini became a holy pilgrimage place after the Mahaparinirvana of Buddha. It was in 249 BC that Emperor Ashoka arrived and constructed a pillar to verify this as the birthplace of Buddha. The ancient stupas and temples were, over time, buried by soil and nature. In 1896, archaeologist Alois Anton Führer discovered Lumbini. Since that time, the Lumbini Development Trust and foreign crews have endeavoured to preserve, rehabilitate and create the space as a big pilgrimage and tourism place without sacrificing its peaceful and sacred status.
More Than Just History: The Living Spirit of Lumbini
Lumbini is a quiet and vibrant religious site today, which is paid a visit by the people of the globe. Monks sing, believers pray, and guests are able to spend their time in a peaceful atmosphere of the peaceful environment. The unity and common faith are evident in the International Monastic Zone, where temples represent most of Buddhism nations. Our Lumbini Tour Package will make you visit this holy location in a comfortable and more knowledgeable manner.
