Trip Overview

Kanchenjunga Trek is an unforgettable journey to the base camp of the world’s third-highest mountain, Kanchenjunga. Kanchenjunga Peak, which stands at an altitude of 8,586 m, is a fascinating sight for trekking enthusiasts. This trek provides you with the opportunity to view Kanchenjunga Peak up close, along with various towering snow-capped mountain peaks.

On this 22-day Kanchenjunga trek, you will visit and explore the Kanchenjunga region, including Kanchenjunga National Park. Kanchenjunga Trek is also called Kanchenjunga Circuit because you will explore both Kanchenjunga North and South Base Camps.

Kanchenjunga trek offers everything that trekkers dream of seeing, like eye-catching views of the mountain range and the Himalayan glacial lake, spotting various wildlife, walking through beautiful forests, picturesque villages, and breathtaking landscapes.

The extreme wilderness and the peaceful natural beauty of the Kanchenjunga region are not describable in the world. So, to experience it by yourself, you need to join this trek.

Major Attractions of Kanchenjunga Trek

Ghunsa Village(3400 meters):

Ghunsa village is located in the Kanchenjunga Region in Ghunsa Khola Valley, north of Kanchenjunga. It is one of the popular stops before heading for the trekking to Kanchenjunga Region. This small and picturesque village links the Kanchenjunga North and South base camp trekking trails. The beautiful rhododendron forests and traditional villages surround the Ghunsa Village. From here, you can enjoy the panoramic view of snow-peaked mountains. Also, the luxurious tea house and warm hospitality of this village add to the beauty of Kanchenjunga Trek.

Oktang Viewpoint( 4730 meters):

Oktang Viewpoint is located close to the south side of the Kanchenjunga Base camp. During the Kanchenjunga trek, you will visit this viewpoint from where you can enjoy the breathtaking South face of Kanchenjunga, Glacier, and other surrounding snow-capped mountains. Also the beauty of Kanchenjunga Region that can be seen from here is equally stunning.

Khambachen Valley:

Khambachen Valley is another major attraction of the Kanchenjunga trek. Kambachne Valley is located on the east side of Mt Kanchenjunga. Trekkers spend time acclimatizing in this beautiful small village. From this valley, trekkers usually head for a side trip to the Nupchu Pokhari, which is Glacial Lake.

Also, people visit Janu Viewpoint(Janu Himal Base Camp), which is another side trip from Khambachen. From this viewpoint, you can enjoy the mesmerizing view of Janu Himal (Kumbhakrna) 7710m and Janu glacier.

Pang Pema 5140 meters:

Pang Pema, which is situated at an altitude of 5,140 m above sea level, is also known as Kanchenjunga North Base Camp. During the Kanchenjunga Circuit, you will visit Pang Pema, from where you can enjoy the breathtaking view of Kanchenjunga Glacier, Chang Himal, Ramtang Glacier, and the beautiful view of Kanchenjunga’s north face.

Drohmo Ri viewpoint:

Just situated above the Pange Pema, you will find the Dromo viewpoint. Drohmo is actually a peak which you can trek easily but you need to get a climbing permit. In this Kanchenjunga Trek, you will climb Dhrohmo Peak, but you will visit a viewpoint which is known as Drohmo Ri. It is one of the best viewpoints you will find in the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek. The ultimate view of the peaceful mountain surroundings from this place is indescribable in words.

Tseram and Ramche Campsite:

Another major attraction of the Kanchenjunga trek is the Tseram and Ramche village, located near the Kanchenjunga South base camp. Tseram is a peaceful village that is far from the distraction of city life. From Tseram, you can go on a beautiful day hike to Yamgachha Khola Valley. Just above the Tseram, you will find another peaceful village, Ramche. Ramche is the last tea house for the Kanchenjunga South base camp. In Ramche you can spot Yaks grazing and also a close view of Rathong Peak (6682 meters) and the Kabru Himal range.

Mountain Pass:

The beauty of the Kanchenjunga Trek or Circuit is the cross the several high-altitude mountain passes such as Sinionla Pass 4646 meters, Mirginla Pass 4645 meters, and Selele La Pass 4480 meters. Crossing this mountain pass is challenging, but it is definitely worth it because, from this pass, you can get a lifetime view of the Kanchenjunga Region and several mountain peaks without any obstruction.

Kanyam:

Kanchenjunga trek is not just about watching and exploring the mountain. It also gives you the opportunity to explore Kanyam, which is a famous tourist destination for green tea gardens and picnic spots. You can find greenery everywhere in this village, so this village is also known as the “queen of eastern Nepal.”

Why is Kanchenjunga Trek a Must-Do Trek?

Soaking in undisturbed serenity while trekking, Kanchenjunga trekking is perfect for you. Unlike Everest Base Camp and Annapurna base camp treks, which are rampant with tourists, Kanchenjunga has a raw aesthetic that is picture-perfect for trekking enthusiasts. Kanchenjunga is the 3rd highest peak in the world, making it an adventurous destination as well. But what exactly makes this a “must-do trek”? Below are some reasons to explain why Kanchenjunga should be on the top treks of your list:

Untouched Wilderness and Raw Beauty:

Forget crowded teahouses and well-worn trails. You will find a very limited number of tourists on the trekking trails. This allows trekkers to embrace trekking’s true essence fully. For those who enjoy alpine aesthetics, Kanchenjunga is made up of dense pales full of snow-capped mountains, the Himalayan ranges and glaciers, which makes the view astonishing without people distracting you.

A Diverse Ecosystem and Cultural Immersion:

In addition to growing and harvesting crops, this trek also allows observation of the changes in the ecosystem, starting from subtropical forests, carrying onto alpine meadows, and culminating into harsh, glaciated surroundings situated near Kanchenjunga, which makes the journey even more exciting. In addition, the path surrounds remote settlements of Rai, Limbu and Gurkha Sherpa giving trekkers the chance to enhance their understanding of locals, enhancing the experience beyond basic expectations.

Unparalleled Views of Kanchenjunga:

Even though the trek doesn’t lead to Kanchenjunga Base Camp the same way it does with Everest, it arguably provides more breathtaking and diverse views of the peak and its neighboring glaciers. The mighty Kanchenjunga fulfills every expectation, and from Pelangpema, one can expect their breath to be taken away by the awe-inspiring and panoramic views that will remain with them forever.

Challenging but Rewarding:

There aren’t many easy things in life, and that is inherent in the Kanchenjunga Trek. The trek is difficult and not for the faint of heart. A reasonable level of fitness is needed, along with some level of acclimatization. Be ready for long days of walking, cardio steep ascents and descents, and trained walking in potentially harsh weather conditions. All of these add to the beauty of the trek which is why it makes the experience picturesque. The scenery as they trek around all combines with the feeling of achievement after completing a day of hiking to create a deeply fulfilling and unforgettable experience.

An Authentic Himalayan Experience:

Compared to the highly commercialized treks in Nepal, the Kanchenjunga Trek stands out for providing an undiluted, untouched Himalayan experience. The infrastructure is basic, and the region is remote, which makes it necessary to depend on one’s trekking team and local villagers. There is, therefore, an appreciation of nature as well as the people.

Why We Don’t Fly Directly to Suketar for Kanchenjunga Trekking: Ensuring Reliability and Comfort

Travelers might wonder, why the program does not fly straight to the nearest airport of Suketar in the Taplejung district on route to Mt. Kanchenjunga base camps.

For several reasons, as the flight to Suketar is unpredictable, and unreliable due to lack of passengers. In other cases is the weather factor, where flight can be delayed and might lead to cancellation.

To be on the safe side and to maintain the itinerary days, we have to fly to Bharatpur airport, where flights can operate in all seasons. Has more flights on bigger planes at least twice a day.

Kanchenjunga trekking areas, due to its remoteness with less number of trekkers, the lodge and hotels are not up to the standard. We will try to accommodate our clients in the best lodge where available. The other option is tented camping, with more field staff and cook and kitchen hands to make the adventure enjoyable and successful.

Best Seasons for Kanchenjunga Circuit / Base Camp Trek:

The best time for Kanchenjunga Trekking is from mid-Spring March to May with autumn/fall, from September to November months.
Springtime is spectacular with wildflowers in seasonal bloom and rhododendrons of various species from tall trees to bushes with different colors.

The national flower of Nepal the Rhododendron Arboreum species of bright red color, the mid-hills will be alive. During March to May with bright flowers make a great contrast with snow-dusted Himalayan peaks, green wide valleys, charming villages, and spectacular views of the wide mountain ranges.

Can be cold morning and late afternoon till nighttime, but days are bright and sunny for clear views of Himalayan peaks. Can get snowed sometimes on higher regions and passes. The next best time is in autumn/fall with bright clear days but short sun-light hours, an amazing season for a grand vista of surrounding scenery.

Much colder morning and nighttime with bright starry nights.
Expect snow-fall sometimes as autumn is near to winter, but enjoyable season for this lovely adventure.

Religion and Culture on Kanchenjunga Trekking:

Lower areas of mid-hills from Ilam onwards, are populated by mixed tribes of hill people mostly Kirat Rai / Limbu, with Gurung, Magar, and Tamang people.

Includes Hindu tribes of Brahmin and Chettries with other minorities of Dalits. Mid-Hills villages a blend of Hinduism and Buddhist religious cultures that makes the area more interesting to visit. In higher areas of Kanchenjanga majority of Tibetan-origin people of Bhotia and Sherpa the highlanders of Eastern Himalayas.

This trek is not for first-time trekkers, those who are physically not active and cannot walk for around 5-6 hours daily on average. Also, we suggest this trek not be undertaken by a person who has a history of serious illness, including respiratory problems.

Consuming alcohol is considered a bad idea, especially when you are heading for a high-altitude trek. The main reason for this is alcohol dehydrates your body, and your body cannot perform well during the trek. Also, alcohol helps to trigger the symptoms of altitude sickness. So, we highly discourage you from drinking alcohol and even smoking during the Kanchenjunga Trek.

In the lower region of the Kanchenjunga Region, you might find the attached toilet facilities, but when you start to reach a higher altitude, there will be a shared toilet in the tea house. You will find the squat type of toilets and there will be amenities inside the toilets like toilet paper. We suggest you carry toiletries with you when you pack for this trek.

We suggest you carry the permits that are given to you by the tour agency and a copy of your passport and travel insurance.

We suggest you make the proper plan before arriving in Nepal. If you wish to visit Nepal early, it is possible, but Namaste Nepal will not take care of finances except for what is written included in the trekking package.

Namaste Nepal will arrange only meals for you for the water and any other drinks you need to pay for on your own. You can buy the drinking water from the small shops or refill your bottle from the tea house by paying some money to them.

For the Kanchenjunga trek we suggest you buy good quality trekking shoes which help you to walk easily in difficult and rough terrain. Also, your trekking shoes should be waterproof and durable for all weather conditions.
