Trip Overview
Kanchenjunga Trek is an unforgettable journey to the base camp of the world’s third-highest mountain, Kanchenjunga. Kanchenjunga Peak, which stands at an altitude of 8,586 m, is a fascinating sight for trekking enthusiasts. This trek provides you with the opportunity to view Kanchenjunga Peak up close, along with various towering snow-capped mountain peaks.
On this 22-day Kanchenjunga trek, you will visit and explore the Kanchenjunga region, including Kanchenjunga National Park. Kanchenjunga Trek is also called Kanchenjunga Circuit because you will explore both Kanchenjunga North and South Base Camps.
Kanchenjunga trek offers everything that trekkers dream of seeing, like eye-catching views of the mountain range and the Himalayan glacial lake, spotting various wildlife, walking through beautiful forests, picturesque villages, and breathtaking landscapes.
The extreme wilderness and the peaceful natural beauty of the Kanchenjunga region are not describable in the world. So, to experience it by yourself, you need to join this trek.
Major Attractions of Kanchenjunga Trek
Ghunsa Village(3400 meters):
Ghunsa village is located in the Kanchenjunga Region in Ghunsa Khola Valley, north of Kanchenjunga. It is one of the popular stops before heading for the trekking to Kanchenjunga Region. This small and picturesque village links the Kanchenjunga North and South base camp trekking trails. The beautiful rhododendron forests and traditional villages surround the Ghunsa Village. From here, you can enjoy the panoramic view of snow-peaked mountains. Also, the luxurious tea house and warm hospitality of this village add to the beauty of Kanchenjunga Trek.
Oktang Viewpoint( 4730 meters):
Oktang Viewpoint is located close to the south side of the Kanchenjunga Base camp. During the Kanchenjunga trek, you will visit this viewpoint from where you can enjoy the breathtaking South face of Kanchenjunga, Glacier, and other surrounding snow-capped mountains. Also the beauty of Kanchenjunga Region that can be seen from here is equally stunning.
Khambachen Valley:
Khambachen Valley is another major attraction of the Kanchenjunga trek. Kambachne Valley is located on the east side of Mt Kanchenjunga. Trekkers spend time acclimatizing in this beautiful small village. From this valley, trekkers usually head for a side trip to the Nupchu Pokhari, which is Glacial Lake.
Also, people visit Janu Viewpoint(Janu Himal Base Camp), which is another side trip from Khambachen. From this viewpoint, you can enjoy the mesmerizing view of Janu Himal (Kumbhakrna) 7710m and Janu glacier.
Pang Pema 5140 meters:
Pang Pema, which is situated at an altitude of 5,140 m above sea level, is also known as Kanchenjunga North Base Camp. During the Kanchenjunga Circuit, you will visit Pang Pema, from where you can enjoy the breathtaking view of Kanchenjunga Glacier, Chang Himal, Ramtang Glacier, and the beautiful view of Kanchenjunga’s north face.
Drohmo Ri viewpoint:
Just situated above the Pange Pema, you will find the Dromo viewpoint. Drohmo is actually a peak which you can trek easily but you need to get a climbing permit. In this Kanchenjunga Trek, you will climb Dhrohmo Peak, but you will visit a viewpoint which is known as Drohmo Ri. It is one of the best viewpoints you will find in the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek. The ultimate view of the peaceful mountain surroundings from this place is indescribable in words.
Tseram and Ramche Campsite:
Another major attraction of the Kanchenjunga trek is the Tseram and Ramche village, located near the Kanchenjunga South base camp. Tseram is a peaceful village that is far from the distraction of city life. From Tseram, you can go on a beautiful day hike to Yamgachha Khola Valley. Just above the Tseram, you will find another peaceful village, Ramche. Ramche is the last tea house for the Kanchenjunga South base camp. In Ramche you can spot Yaks grazing and also a close view of Rathong Peak (6682 meters) and the Kabru Himal range.
Mountain Pass:
The beauty of the Kanchenjunga Trek or Circuit is the cross the several high-altitude mountain passes such as Sinionla Pass 4646 meters, Mirginla Pass 4645 meters, and Selele La Pass 4480 meters. Crossing this mountain pass is challenging, but it is definitely worth it because, from this pass, you can get a lifetime view of the Kanchenjunga Region and several mountain peaks without any obstruction.
Kanyam:
Kanchenjunga trek is not just about watching and exploring the mountain. It also gives you the opportunity to explore Kanyam, which is a famous tourist destination for green tea gardens and picnic spots. You can find greenery everywhere in this village, so this village is also known as the “queen of eastern Nepal.”
Why is Kanchenjunga Trek a Must-Do Trek?
Soaking in undisturbed serenity while trekking, Kanchenjunga trekking is perfect for you. Unlike Everest Base Camp and Annapurna base camp treks, which are rampant with tourists, Kanchenjunga has a raw aesthetic that is picture-perfect for trekking enthusiasts. Kanchenjunga is the 3rd highest peak in the world, making it an adventurous destination as well. But what exactly makes this a “must-do trek”? Below are some reasons to explain why Kanchenjunga should be on the top treks of your list:
Untouched Wilderness and Raw Beauty:
Forget crowded teahouses and well-worn trails. You will find a very limited number of tourists on the trekking trails. This allows trekkers to embrace trekking’s true essence fully. For those who enjoy alpine aesthetics, Kanchenjunga is made up of dense pales full of snow-capped mountains, the Himalayan ranges and glaciers, which makes the view astonishing without people distracting you.
A Diverse Ecosystem and Cultural Immersion:
In addition to growing and harvesting crops, this trek also allows observation of the changes in the ecosystem, starting from subtropical forests, carrying onto alpine meadows, and culminating into harsh, glaciated surroundings situated near Kanchenjunga, which makes the journey even more exciting. In addition, the path surrounds remote settlements of Rai, Limbu and Gurkha Sherpa giving trekkers the chance to enhance their understanding of locals, enhancing the experience beyond basic expectations.
Unparalleled Views of Kanchenjunga:
Even though the trek doesn’t lead to Kanchenjunga Base Camp the same way it does with Everest, it arguably provides more breathtaking and diverse views of the peak and its neighboring glaciers. The mighty Kanchenjunga fulfills every expectation, and from Pelangpema, one can expect their breath to be taken away by the awe-inspiring and panoramic views that will remain with them forever.
Challenging but Rewarding:
There aren’t many easy things in life, and that is inherent in the Kanchenjunga Trek. The trek is difficult and not for the faint of heart. A reasonable level of fitness is needed, along with some level of acclimatization. Be ready for long days of walking, cardio steep ascents and descents, and trained walking in potentially harsh weather conditions. All of these add to the beauty of the trek which is why it makes the experience picturesque. The scenery as they trek around all combines with the feeling of achievement after completing a day of hiking to create a deeply fulfilling and unforgettable experience.
An Authentic Himalayan Experience:
Compared to the highly commercialized treks in Nepal, the Kanchenjunga Trek stands out for providing an undiluted, untouched Himalayan experience. The infrastructure is basic, and the region is remote, which makes it necessary to depend on one’s trekking team and local villagers. There is, therefore, an appreciation of nature as well as the people.

Why We Don’t Fly Directly to Suketar for Kanchenjunga Trekking: Ensuring Reliability and Comfort
Travelers might wonder, why the program does not fly straight to the nearest airport of Suketar in the Taplejung district on route to Mt. Kanchenjunga base camps.
For several reasons, as the flight to Suketar is unpredictable, and unreliable due to lack of passengers. In other cases is the weather factor, where flight can be delayed and might lead to cancellation.
To be on the safe side and to maintain the itinerary days, we have to fly to Bharatpur airport, where flights can operate in all seasons. Has more flights on bigger planes at least twice a day.
Kanchenjunga trekking areas, due to its remoteness with less number of trekkers, the lodge and hotels are not up to the standard. We will try to accommodate our clients in the best lodge where available. The other option is tented camping, with more field staff and cook and kitchen hands to make the adventure enjoyable and successful.

Guest HouseDay 5: Trek from Sekathum to Amjilosa
Your trekking adventure commences today! You will hike from Sekathum to Amjilosa, a tiny hamlet perched in the hills. It takes roughly 6 – 7 hours to trek, and although it can be strenuous, the journey is filled with breathtaking landscapes and tranquil nature.
As the Republic Day celebration is later, around noon time, the day starts with an easy stroll around the Ghunsa Khola River. The sound of the flowing river and the thick vegetation surrounding you turns out to be very peaceful. After some time, the path becomes much steeper and more demanding. You will have to climb the tight spots on the hillside and though it is exhausting, the stunning vistas make it all good.
Indeed, you’re going to walk through bands of bamboo and rhododendrons. You might be lucky enough to hear some birds singing or even leaves rustling in the gentle breeze. There are also some exciting suspension bridges bound to cross over the river. These bridges also provide breathtaking views of the region’s waterfalls and deep valleys.
On the whole, the path is extremely silent and feels calm at the same time. You are bound to pass some tiny villages where the villagers are engaged in very basic but essential tasks, for example, farming or transporting goods to and from their homes. You can rest now and grab a drink to recover your breath and enjoy the undisturbed way of life you will experience along the trail.
When you reach close to Amjilosa, you will hike downhill. Amjilosa is a calm and beautiful place with traditional stone houses and terraced farmland. After arriving, you will spend your night here and prepare for tomorrow’s journey.

Guest HouseDay 6: Trek from Amjilosa to Gyabla
You will be trekking from Amjilosa to Gyabla today, farther into the mountains. The trekking takes 5-6 hours and is filled with serene woods, scenic vistas, and a look at life in the mountains.
You start the day hiking uphill in a stand of tall trees. The scenery is peaceful, filled with the sounds of the woods. The trail may narrow in spots, so be careful and hike slowly. Every so often, I glance up to catch a glimpse of the sun filtering through the trees. The crisp mountain air is refreshing, just what you need for the hike.
Along the trek, the sides of the cliff drop away with amazing waterfalls and tiny streams cutting through the trail. These are the perfect places to stop, catch a breath, and listen to the soothing gurgle of the water. You might even see locals passing along the trail with provisions or cleaning their animals. A small glimpse into the life of the people out here.
Once you hike through the woods, the way evens out, and in the distance, you can see Gyabla. It’s a very small, peaceful-looking village in a lovely valley, surrounded by green fields and big hills all around. When you finally arrive, you know that all the efforts you’ve made are worth it.

Today’s hike is from Gyabla to Ghunsa as you continue to move higher into the mountains. The hike takes 5-6 hours so that you can enjoy the scenery as well as the serenity of the trail. You begin the day with a gradual climb up through pine and rhododendron forest. The air is crisp, and birdsong provides a gentle greeting to your hike. At some point, the dense woods give way, and you can see a glimpse of the valley down below.
Along the way, you cross small streams and pass over many bridges. These are pleasant spots to stop and admire the view. The trail is easy to navigate but occasionally uneven in spots, so be careful especially the uphill sections. You also see long strings of colorful, flapping prayer flags waving in the wind, a glimpse into the religious history of the region.
Then, the scenery becomes more dramatic. You see snow-capped mountains in the distance and yaks grazing uphill. The trail goes through a few small villages, and people continue about their everyday lives. These are the glimpses that give you a view of life here, unspoiled and close to nature.
You will arrive at the sleepy village of Ghunsa by the end of the day, which lies next to the Ghunsa Khola River. Guest HoustDay 8: Trek from Ghunsa to Khambachen
You will trek from Ghunsa after breakfast, a journey that would otherwise take between five and six hours. Observe prayer wheels painted red with inscriptions of gold as you exit from Ghunsa, so stop for a moment to turn them, wishing for a hassle-free trek. Before long, the trail splits into two paths, one of which is for Kumbhakarna Himal of 7,710 meters (25,300 feet), and the other is for Kanchenjunga North Base Camp.
The trail then becomes a narrow track with grassy fields opening up on both sides, with a comfortable and easy walk. Then, you will arrive at the peaceful River Thango, where it flows at an elevation of 3,442 meters.
From there, the trail continues to Khambachen, and a sense of isolation starts taking over. The landscape becomes rocky, boulder-strewn. There are juniper trees along the trail, as well as scattered rhododendrons breaking up the otherwise subdued earth tones. Snow-tipped mountains sit off in the distance, their majesty inspiring you to press on.
The trail then turns through a forest, with a brief climb on stone steps. There is a peaceful resting spot near the top of the climb, indicated by the vividly painted prayer wheels and intricately carved Tibetan stones. The single-track trail then continues along the left side of the Ghunsa River, up to Tartang, standing at 3,583 meters above sea level.
The trail from Tartang turns into a mix of flat ground and gradual slope to bring you up to the 3,740-meter-high Chhermalung. Then, you will find yourself at Labuk, with an altitude of 3,797 meters, where there is a teahouse where one can rest as well as have lunch.
The final part is an uphill climb through a section of landslide. Along the way, there is a glimpse of the Hajare Gufa, or the Thousand Cave, a common resting place for climbers. Two additional hours of trekking will lead you through to Khambachen, 4,150 meters above sea level. There, you will register for accommodations, have a hearty dinner, and rest as you prepare yourselves for the night’s sleep.

After breakfast, you will make the short hike to Phak Tanglung, which is at 4200 m. The hike lasts for around 3 hours and is great during this adaptation period as one can enjoy the views.
You will hike over a suspension bridge and hike towards Phat Tanglung. Mount Kumbhakarna will be visible at different points of the hike. Phat Tanglung is a Kirat holy site with an enclosure full of prayer flags and bells. After some time, you will commence off-back to Khambachen. Afterward, feel free to go down to the village, have some quiet time, and do things you enjoy if there is still time.

Guest HouseDay 10: Trek from Khambachen to Lhonak
You begin your day in Khambachen with a hearty breakfast before packing and starting the walk to Lhonak. The easy-to-follow path offers a broad perspective of the mountain peaks.
It is a one-hour hike to Lumbuchhemu at 4,222 meters, where the track gradually rises higher. You eventually arrive at Ladam at 4,291 meters after walking up the riverbank on rocks and lush grazing areas. Watch your footing and be careful as the track passes through a landslide zone.
The stunning view of the 4,381-meter-tall Khando waterfall, which rises over the desolate Himalayan landscape, is yet further on. At an elevation of 4,596 meters, the hike continues to ascend along a desolate, rocky path before coming to a rest for the afternoon at Ramdang. Following some refreshments, the journey continues to weave through the Kanchenjunga Glacier’s spectacular views. As you travel to the Lhonak River, you may perhaps catch a sight of the Blue sheep.
You walk 10-15 minutes to Lhonak on the wooden bridge over the Lhonak River at an altitude of 4,780 meters. The village is small and is encircled by high mountains, the shape of the mountains forming an added feature to make it beautiful. Guest HouseDay 11: Hike to Kanchenjunga North base camp (Pang Pema) and return to Lhonak
The adventure of the day continues to the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp. Begin the day by following an ascent amidst scenic views of the Kanchenjunga glacier. Early on the trek, you arrive at Syamjo (4,851 meters), familiar turf as the native habitat of the blue sheep. The trek continues becoming increasingly challenging as you slog over ice tracks, icy surfaces, and rocky terrain to reach Thanakpu (4,966 meters).
The route gets more challenging with landslide-prone land and tight ridges where you must tread with caution. Climbing up gradually, you’ll get your first sight of Mount Kanchenjunga. Soon you’ll arrive at Jorkyu at an elevation of 5,035 meters, proceeding to reach Pangpema at an elevation of 5,142 meters, covering level and boulder-covered land in between.
Eventually, at the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp, you’ll be gifted with views of the world’s third-highest mountain. Before you leave, take some time to enjoy your well-earned break, take some pictures, and bask in the scenery.
Backtrack along your steps; you’ll be following the same way to get to Lhonak. When you arrive there, settle into your accommodation and relax with a satisfying supper. Pat yourself on the back for your amazing feat, reflect on the day’s experience, and look forward to an overnight stay at Lhonak.

Guest HouseDay 12: Trek from Lhonak to Ghunsa
Today’s trek takes you from Lhonak to Ghunsa, a journey of about 7 to 8 hours. While it’s possible to split this into two days, it’s worth pushing on to reach Ghunsa. The trail descends around 1,300 meters, making it manageable despite the long day.
One of the best reasons to reach Ghunsa is the better accommodation. I stayed at the Peaceful Guest House, which offers a good shower and tasty food. The dining room is nice, but I recommend eating in the family kitchen. The warm fire and cozy family vibe make it a special experience.
Enjoy the changing scenery as you approach Ghunsa, and look forward to a well-earned rest in this charming village.

It takes roughly seven to eight hours to travel from Lhonak to Ghunsa on today’s walk. Even though this may be divided into two days, it is still worthwhile to continue in order to go to Ghunsa. Despite the lengthy day, the course is feasible because it descends only 1,300 meters.
The improved accommodations in Ghunsa are among the top reasons to travel there. A nice shower and delicious food are provided at the Peaceful Guest House, where you will stay. Although the dining room is pleasant, we suggest you use the family kitchen for meals. It is a unique experience because of the comfortable family atmosphere and warm fire.
As you get closer to Ghunsa, take in the shifting landscape and anticipate a well-earned nap in this beautiful village.

Guest HouseDay 16: Hike to Oktang (Explore Yalung Glacier, Kanchenjunga South Base Camp and back to Ramche /Tseram
On the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp trek, Ramche is the final teahouse. So today, we will pack the lunch for today’s hike and prepare to leave for the full-day excursion of Kanchenjunga South base camp.
Early in the morning, we proceed from Ramjer. On the north face of Ramjer, the trail leads to a glacier. It will take you around an hour to walk from Ramjer to this glacier.
The west and south faces of Kanchenjunga will be a blessing once you arrive at the glacier. The hike has so far made it difficult to see certain portions of the top. But they will now appear fascinating on the horizon. We can reach the lateral moraine of the Yalung glacier in about an hour via a little road. After that, we arrived at a chorten with clear views of Kanchenjunga’s main summit. Our day’s destination will be either the Kanchenjunga base camp or the Oktang base camp.
Before returning for the night, we will explore this stunning area for an extended period of time. The journey will return to Ramjer or, if possible, even to Tseram for an overnight end.
