Altitude sickness(AMS) is a serious concern on high-altitude treks like the Gokyo Valley Trek. Here are some tips for acclimatization and preventing altitude sickness:

  1. Ascend Gradually: Walk at your own pace and once you reach above 3,000 meter allow your body time to adjust to higher altitudes.
  2. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water(2-3 liters) throughout the day.
  3. Rest Days: Include rest days in your itinerary to acclimatize.
  4. Symptoms: Be aware and monitor the altitude sickness symptoms, such as headaches and nausea, and descend if they persist.
  5. Diamox: Take altitude sickness medicine before a Lukla flight and during the trek, as advised by your doctor.

What to do if you catch altitude sickness during a trek:

  • Don’t panic, take a rest and descend to a lower altitude.
  • If symptoms worsen, request an immediate helicopter evacuation.
  • Never ignore the early symptoms of AMS; if it turns into HACE or HAPE, it can be life-threatening.

Staying connected during the trek can be challenging, but it is possible in many areas:

  • Mobile Network: Available in some parts of the trek; Ncell offers the best coverage. To use the Sim, you can purchase it at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) or at a shop on Thamel Street. To purchase a SIM in Nepal, it will cost around USD 1, and data will cost around USD 5-10, depending on the package you choose.
  • Wifi: Wifi is available in almost all the tea houses during the Gokyo Valley trek in Nepal. At higher elevations, the connection might be slow, but at lower elevations, it is smooth.
  • Internet Cafes: Available in larger villages like Lukla and Namche Bazaar.

There is a common practice of tipping the Guide and porters in Nepal after completing the trek. You can show your gratitude by tipping after getting satisfied with the service rendered by the Guide, porter and staff, including at the hotels.

There is no exact percentage of the amount you must tip. You can tip as much as you want. If you ask us, how much should you tip? We recommend tipping around 10-15% of the total cost to your guide and porter.

  • Guide: A tip of $10 to $15 per day is standard.
  • Porter: $5 to $10 per day is appropriate.

Planning and Logistics

The best times for high-altitude treks in Nepal are Spring (March, April, May) and Autumn (September, October, November). During these seasons, the air is refreshed by the monsoon rain, providing clear visibility and stunning mountain views, with comfortably warm weather. While lower altitude treks are possible in winter and monsoon, higher altitudes can be extremely cold and dangerous, and trails above 4000 meters are often blocked by heavy snowfall. Additionally, monsoon rains can make the trails slippery, and leeches, known as Juka, are common during the wet season. Despite these challenges, trekking is still feasible with proper precautions, and there are usually fewer trekkers on the trails during these times.
