Sunrise over the Annapurna, Views from Poon Hill

The height of the Poon Hill is just 3210 meters from the sea level. Unlike the famous trekking paths such as the Everest base camp trek and Annapurna base camp trek the trekking routes are relatively short and easy. Also, there is no technical part in this Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek and you don’t need to have an advanced level of mountaineering skills.

Walking for 5-6 hours for short days might not be tough for you if you have a basic level of physical fitness. This trek will not take you much height so there is also less chance of having altitude sickness. This trek is suitable for both beginners and regular mountaineers offering a unique experience in each and every step of your trek.

Understanding How Challenging is Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek

Even though this Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is relatively short and easier than most of the other treks in the Annapurna Region, it is not like easy walking in the park. This trek poses several risk factors which can be dealt with easily if we plan and prepare early. Let’s see the challenge that you might need to face during Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek.

Duration and Distance: The total trekking distance that you need to cover during this 7 days Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is around 45 km. Even though trekking duration is short, walking for 4-6 hours per day on average for some people might be difficult.

Altitude: This trek takes you to the maximum altitude of 3210.00m. Though this height is not risky to have altitude sickness still we need to be careful. We need to follow the acclimatization and learn well about altitude sickness and its preventive measures.

Trail Conditions: During this trek, you will pass through trodden trails which consist of steep stones, stairs, forest, suspension bridge and some muddy areas, especially when it rains.

Physical Fitness Requirements: Trekkers with a basic level of fitness and head for this trek. Technical skills are not required however you need to prepare yourself for walking 5-6 hours during the trek while carrying a backpack.

Weather Conditions: The weather conditions are unpredictable, especially in the Annapurna region. Also, the climatic conditions depend upon which season you prefer to trek if you trek in winter it will be extremely cold, with heavy snowfall at high altitudes and during the monsoon the heavy rainfall creates the chances of flash floods and landslides.

Accommodation and food: You will spend your night in the tea house which provides basic lodging and food. You cannot expect a wide variety of menu and luxury while staying in the tea house.

Mental Stamina: Similar to physical fitness, you also need to mentally prepare yourself for living in a place with basic facilities. Additionally, you need to know how to deal with changing climatic and physical demands.

How to Prepare for the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek?

Even though the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is not challenging, first-time trekkers in Nepal’s Himalayan region should prepare physically. Success depends on preparation. So, before beginning on this lovely trek, consider these few guidelines for maintaining physical condition.

Cardiovascular Training: You can start doing activities like Jogging, brisk walking, cycling, swimming, or stair climbing for 30 minutes a day for at least 4-5 weeks. These activities will help you to build a strong cardiovascular system which is necessary for this trek.

Strength Training: The main objective of strength training is to build strong legs through exercises like squats, lunges, and planks. This training will support your back and help you to walk for hours while carrying the backpack during the trek.

Flexibility: To make your body flexible you can start joining the gym, or yoga class. Flexibility exercise will help to aid muscle recovery and reduce the risk of injury.

Altitude Training (Optional): If you haven’t been to a high altitude before then you can go hiking/trekking near your palace. It will help your body to adjust to high altitude and help your body get used to reduced oxygen levels.

Mental Preparation: Along with physical trekking it is necessary to train your mind also. Having a peaceful mind and cultivating a positive mindset will help you deal with challenges that might occur during the trek. For this, you can do meditation, and long hours running and make yourself similar to the trekking condition.

  • Best Time for Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is possible to do throughout the year. Although it is possible to trek through the year, different seasons bring their own sets of challenges and adventures. Let’s explore the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek in different seasons.

  • Spring Seasons(March, April, May)

The spring season which spans from March to May presents favourable trekking climatic conditions with suitable temperatures for trekkers. Therefore it is an ideal time for the Ghorepani poon hill trek. The morning and the evening temperatures are cold but during the day the warm temperature makes it easier for the trekkers providing a clear view of the surrounding landscape and mountain peaks.

During the spring you can expect greenery everywhere in the low-altitude areas whereas the forest in the high-altitude areas is covered with vibrant colourful rhododendron flowers. You will find a huge number of people heading to witness the beauty of the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek.

  • Autumn (September, October, November)

Similar to the spring, autumn is another best time for trekking in the Ghorepani poon hill trek. The air, freshly washed by the monsoon rain, is crystal clear, stunning mountain scenery, and the weather is still comfortably warm. Trekking during autumn means you will also get the opportunity to witness Nepal’s popular festivals Dashian and Tihar. You can witness the culture and traditions as well as enjoy the local people.

  • Winter (December, January, February)

Although Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek can be taken during winter, the cold can be bitter around the Poon Hill area. You need to wear warm clothes that will protect you from the cold and chilly temperatures. Also, you can expect heavy snowfall in high-altitude areas like Poon Hill, Ghorepani and Tadapani.

Despite it being a little bit challenging to trek in the winter, trekking in the winter offers beautiful sights of snowy mountains and peaceful forests covered in white snow. This time is best, especially for the people who love to take photographs. You can capture stunning shots of the snow-covered landscapes and serene surroundings.

  • Monsoon/Summer(June, July, August)

During the monsoon the weather is unpredictable. Suddenly the clear sky will turn dark and you can expect heavy rainfall. The trail path will be slippery and there is a high chance of flash floods, landslides and risk of getting injured. You need to be very careful while trekking in the monsoon season.

If you like to trek in the monsoon you need to pack all clothing and gear stuff waterproof to protect you from getting wet. Monsoon means a high chance of getting sick so you need to take care of your body and keep your body hydrated all the time.

Another thing that will irritate you during the trek is Nepal’s famous Juka (leeches) and mosquitoes. Also, snakes are highly active in the forest areas. However, with the right gear and equipment and with extra care it is still possible to trek in summer.
