Short Information
Bhutan the last and only kingdom around the Himalayas located in South East Asia borders northeast India. To the south lies Bangladesh and towards the north where the Himalayan Mountain range forms a barrier between Bhutan and Tibet / China. For a small kingdom of Bhutan with an interesting historical period that begins from 747 A.D. Since the 17th Century, the country’s official name has been the Druk Yul, which means ‘The Land of Thunder Dragon’.
History also shows that the name Bhutan might have been derived from the ancient word ‘Bhu-Uttan’ translated as ‘The High Land’. The other version with the name ‘Bhots-Ant’ meaning the country at the ‘End or South of Tibet’. But the true native of Bhutan is known as Druk Yul the Land of Drukpa the actual name of local Bhutanese.
The home of the Drukpa sect is known as Kagyupa, a branch of Mahayana Buddhism the Greater Vehicle, the official religion of Bhutan. Founded by revered 17th Century saint Guru Padma Sambhava who introduced Mahayana Buddhism in Tibet and flourished in Bhutan.
Bhutan in the early days was made of various independent states and kingdoms that retained the strong influence of the great Tibetan Empire. In the 16th century, King Ngawang Namgyal the king of a small state in Bhutan unified all kingdoms into one Bhutan. Namgyal was also the first Rinpoche, a religious leader, and great guru who ruled the country.
As a spiritual head of Bhutan, like the Dalai Lama in Tibet and later on the Wangchuck from a noble family. Emerged into power as a monarch and ruled the country to this day and became part of the United Nations in 1971.
At present Bhutan remains as one of the Shangri-La around the eastern end of the great Himalayas. Mt. Gangkhar Puensum rises at the height of 7, 571 m and 24,840 feet high, the highest peak in Bhutan. Where all mountains are regarded as the abode of God, Goddesses, and holy spirits, are not allowed for climbing.

Bhutan’s famous site fort of Druk Gyaldzong is a ruined fort built in memory of the victory over Tibetan invaders. In the 17th Century, likewise, the National Museum of the History of the Country displays rich collections of fine arts and weapons.

The best time to visit the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan is in springtime from March to May. Days are much longer with enough sun-light hours where hills are alive with wildflowers in full bloom, especially the rhododendron.
Next, the best time is in the autumn season from September to November month, the day is fine but short sunlight hours. Cold in the morning, late afternoon till night time with the clear starry night sky.
