Overview

About 150 years ago, Nepal fought Tibet over salt, and some of the biggest areas where this war took place are in the Langtang Region of Nepal. The "Tamang Heritage Trail" is the newly developed tourism product, off the beaten track, which highlights an ancient lifestyle combining it with picturesque scenery and healing baths in natural Hot spring.
The people of this region are mostly Tibetans who came from Kerung in Tibet across the border and settled in Nepal. In earlier days, the citizenship of Nepal would not be offered to real Tibetans, so they changed their ethnicity to Tamang, which is what they still write till the date. The culture and traditions of these people are similar to the Tibetan across the border.

This trekking destination is just a day-long bus journey from the capital, Kathmandu. The 7-day trekking provides varieties of experiences. Tamang Heritage trek is full of unique surprises. Tamang rituals, Tibetan culture, festivals, traditional architecture of Tamang People, costumes, local Syabru/Tamang dances make the exposure to this culture very unique. There is a viewpoint at Goljung Pass, from where views of Langtang, Ganesh Himal, and Kerung (Tibet) can be awe-inspiring. You will get an opportunity to observe Mane and other traditional Tamang dances in Gatlang Village. The villages also sell exclusive handicraft items made from Yak and Ships wool, like traditional caps, Tamang Bakhu, mufflers, and other items. You can enjoy a hot bath in the healing hot spring at Tatopani before reaching Nagthali, where the stay is a unique experience with the views of Mountains and Valleys. The ancient monasteries and houses adorned with rich wood engravings at Farming Thuman Village is an unforgettable experience. Rasuwaghadi is a ruined fort, Current Nepal China Borders history goes dating back to the wars between Nepal and Tibet in the 19th century. It is situated directly south of the footbridge over the Lendi Kola which leads into Tibet Autonomous Region of China. At present, there is an army post and border custom and immigration officials of both countries.  At Briddim one gets to experience the famous Tamang hospitality, where there is a homestay facility in 24 houses.

Best Time for Tamang Heritage Trail trek

Tamang Heritage trail can be done all time of the year as it is so close to the mainland of Kathmandu valley and it doesn't go to the high mountain. However Spring (March, April, May) and Autumn (September, October, November) are the best months. The air, freshly washed by the monsoon rain, is crystal clear, stunning mountain scenery, and the weather is still comfortably warm. In the winter the cold can be bitter and you will find snow in Gatlang and Nakthali village. in Monsoon the trails can be slippery due to the monsoon rain and you may have to trek all day under the rain without any view. Nepal’s famous Juka (leeches) are an un-pleasant feature of the wet season, but with care, trekking can still be possible and there are certainly fewer trekkers on the trail.

Reviews

I have been working in Nepal on and off for years, and met Rajan when he was assisting a friend with her charity work in the Langtang region. Rajan acted as a trekking guide for a trek I did, and was a joy to be with. Not only is he incredibly competent (with a proven track record of keeping trekkers safe even in difficult circumstances) but is great company. He always has a smile on his face, and has an uncanny ability to make anything you could wish for evaporate out of thin air. He knows the routes and teahouses round Nepal like the back of his hand, and is a natural mountaineer. I have referred friends to him in the past who always gave great feedback, those who went solo trekking with him reiterated what a joy he is to speak with and spend time with. Could not recommend highly enough!

In 2015, my friends and I had the incredible good fortune of having Rajan as our trekking guide. When a huge earthquake struck on the first day of our trip, Rajan took care of us, put our safety and comfort ahead of his own, and was always thinking about the next steps with an insight and clarity than comes from knowing the mountain environments and cultures inside out. He somehow managed to remain calm, smiling, compassionate and selfless in the face of disaster, and it was his attitude and aptitude that truly saved our lives. Since then, we've had many wonderful treks together, and I always recommend him to friends who are looking for someone to take them into the heart of Himalayan culture. Rajan is astonishingly clever, knowledgeable, and thoughtful, and at the same time he has a brilliant sense of joy and fun that he brings to every trek. There's a reason all his reviews are 5 stars! I can't emphasise enough how excellent he is
