Overview

The Newars of the Kathmandu Valley number about 1.1 million and make up 6% of the population. Their language, Newari, is distinct from Tibetan, Nepali, or Hindi, and they follow a version of Hinduism with Buddhist overtones. The Newars are excellent farmers, as well as skilled artists and Architecture; the Kathmandu Valley is filled with spectacular examples of their artistic work. Newars are found in most parts of Nepal but they are the original inhabitants of Kathmandu Valley and its Surroundings.

Their origins are shrouded in mystery: most Newars have Mongoloid physical characteristics, but there are others who haven't. It is generally accepted that the Newar's ancestors were of varied ethnicity and all settled the Valley -possibly originating with the Kiratis or an even earlier group. Newars lead a communal way of life, but some of their traditions are on the wane. Living so close to the center of power and higher education has also meant there are many Newars in the bureaucracies of Kathmandu. Newars have a distinct culture and tradition having a long history which is mainly influenced by Hinduism and Buddhism with remains of ancient Kirat Culture.

Living Godless Kumari is the famous Newars Tradition in Kathmandu worshiping the young girl manifestations of the Divine female energy. Newars are famous for their Masked Dance and Dhami Dance.  The Indra Jatra and Machhindra Jatra, Bisket Jatra are the biggest festivals of Newars in Kathmandu Valley.
